This is a thread for smaller, miscellaneous items that might not warrant a full post on their own. [See this search for previous "Weekly Tips, Tricks, &c." Threads.](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/search?q=Weekly+tips&restrict_sr=on&sort=new&t=all) Don't feel constrained in regards to what you post, just keep your post vaguely, generally on the topic of emacs.

Update from a couple of weeks ago: after some grinding, I've set the parsing of past comments from this thread to auto update on a weekly basis here: [https://github.com/LaurenceWarne/reddit-emacs-tips-n-tricks/blob/master/out.md](https://github.com/LaurenceWarne/reddit-emacs-tips-n-tricks/blob/master/out.md) I've also fixed the broken highlighting of some code snippets, and hopefully parsed all past threads. There's 200+ comments there (sorted by upvotes), so ctrl-f ing e.g. \`magit\` may help you if you're looking for something specific

I don't think this is worth it as a top-level post, since it's more geared towards XMonad users who also happen to use Emacs, but at least a few folks here might appreciate how easy it is to [rapidly capture ideas](https://tony-zorman.com/posts/orgmode-prompt/2022-08-27-xmonad-and-org-mode.html) by using XMonad's org-mode integration!

Wow, thanks for getting the Reddit threads into plain text! Very useful.

Is there a built-in way to get Swiper's "show all results at once + fuzzy matching" search and display? It's hard to get a sense of context with Isearch. I only use Ivy for Swiper; I know Prot has posts on built-in completion frameworks, but I am not sure of those frameworks work with in-buffer search.

*Embedded calc mode* to insert a quick and dirty calculation in a buffer: To enter Embedded mode, position the Emacs point (cursor) on a formula in any buffer and press ‘C-x * e’ (‘calc-embedded’). Note that ‘C-x * e’ is not to be used in the Calc stack buffer like most Calc commands, but rather in regular editing buffers that are visiting your own files.

I'm looking for examples of custom start pages for Emacs - sort of how the default configuration includes an intro and links to resources - I'd like something like that that includes items from my org-agenda, a monthly calendar that includes holidays, weather forecast, and maybe one or two other things. I haven't been able to find much, so maybe I'm just using the wrong search terms, or what I'm looking for maybe gets delegated to bars, conkys, or web browsers. What do you think?
qzump · 2022-09-02 06:26
Noob idea: tangling source blocks in order of their last edit to minimize damage of breaking config.

Have you looked at [https://github.com/emacs-dashboard/emacs-dashboard](https://github.com/emacs-dashboard/emacs-dashboard) ?

Do you know of a project overrides the default indentation scheme for python? I'm looking to write a small mode for a project I sometimes work on which doesn't follow pep8 for code formatting and would like to know how to do it and maybe take inspiration

neat!
CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-09-02 15:23
This is exactly what I'm looking for, thank you!

How can I make org-mode display =verbatim= text with different height depending on whether it is on an heading of level N or not?

Does anyone here know of a guide or some more simple examples on how to use [bui](https://github.com/alezost/bui.el)? I'm trying to build a simple UI for a time tracker app, and it seems like a good fit. However, I'm really struggling to make sense of it. There is one example, that is a little larger than I'd like. I'm trying to shrink it down as a way to understand the pieces, but I'm making basically no progress. This is my first time really working with elisp, so that is probably a factor. However, it really seems to jump all over the place. So if someone knows of an article, guide, documentation, etc. that could help me wrap my head around it, I'd really appreciate it!. If not, do you have any "graphical" ui packages that you'd recommend instead? Like I said above, I want to create a time tracker. So it would just have a list of tracked times on a day that your can start/stop/move around. Thanks everyone :)
