Is it normal that the resolution of PDF-Tools is so low?
Rapiz · 2022-08-30 16:10
Just got PDF-Tools to work but the resolution and included graphics look like tetris.
Any way to fix this? Already enabled the scaling option but it did nothing.
Edit:
TLDR If you are using Arch Linux you need [https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/emacs-pdf-tools-git](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/emacs-pdf-tools-git) to fix the issue for pdf-tools-install.
PhantomSeahorse · 2022-08-30 16:34
Nope. Not normal

Are you sure pdf-tools actually started? I notice pixelated PDFs when the default doc-view mode is running.
Rapiz · 2022-08-30 17:21
Oh.. yeah it is DocView. But why?
EFLS_ · 2022-08-30 17:58
You need to call `pdf-tools-install`
Not sure why it's called `install` but that's how it works as far as I understand it.
EDIT: Apparently there's more to it, explained in this Stack Exchange answer [https://emacs.stackexchange.com/a/24502](https://emacs.stackexchange.com/a/24502). But just running `pdf-tools-install` works for me.
Rapiz · 2022-08-30 18:09
Tried it with M-x and got
Wrong type argument (and (not null)) file-directory), nil, build-directory
Thanks for the link!

Probably something wrong with your `pdf-tools` installation. I know really little about how to fix this type of stuff, I'd check their github for instructions.
itistheblurstoftimes · 2022-08-30 18:51
Delete the pdf-tools folder, make sure there is only one (ie, you didn't download from melpa and clone from git), restart emacs, reinstall pdf-tools
HM0880 · 2022-08-30 19:01
To fix doc-view bluriness, use:
`(setq doc-view-resolution 600) ; non-blurry doc-view PDFs`
Be sure you are using the latest fork of pdf-tools:
https://github.com/vedang/pdf-tools

currently I can't get pdf-tools-install to work.
I've installed it but I get
Error (use-package: pdf-tools/:init: Wrong type argument
I get this as soon as I place (pdf-tools-install) anywhere or even if I call it with M-x pdf-tools-install
I thought that I don't have to install the server stuff?
Rapiz · 2022-08-30 19:23
Also tried it. I will try this again a couple times. Something is messed up.
Ok now it doesn't work sigh
HM0880 · 2022-08-30 19:41
I don't use `use-package`, but here is roughly what I do in my config:
- `(require 'pdf-tools)`
- `(pdf-tools-install) ; this starts the PDF tools server and tries to install it if needed`
Are you `require`-ing PDF tools?
Rapiz · 2022-08-30 19:54
Now I just have your two lines for pdf-tools but still:
Wrong type argument (and (not null) file-directory), nil, build-directory
My steps are
1. M-x package-install RET pdf-tools
2. Emacs returns Package pdf-tools installed
3. restart emacs
4. Neet to rebuild the epdfinfo program, do it now?
5. y
6. Wrong type argument: (and (not null) file-directory), nil, build-directory
I just read [https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/54590/pdf-tools-asking-to-be-rebuilt-when-emacs-is-started](https://emacs.stackexchange.com/questions/54590/pdf-tools-asking-to-be-rebuilt-when-emacs-is-started)
Seems like I don't need pdf-tools-install
But AUCTex return Unknown "PDF Tools" viewer. What did you set for this?
Edit:
For anyone encountering this with Arch Linux

I've gotten the same error ("Wrong argument type ...") running pdf-tools-install for months, over multiple builds of master (emacs 29, debian testing). I run list-packages and install from there; that works, but pdf-tools-install doesn't. I tried a few times with the source from the git repo (https://github.com/vedang/pdf-tools) with the same error. I don't really need the package, so I haven't tried too hard to figure out what's wrong - just letting you know you're not the only one getting this error.
Rapiz · 2022-09-01 11:07
If you are using Arch Linux you need the Arch Linux emacs-pdf-tools-git repo to solve this error.
