Is there a way to do digital handwritings in emacs?
Rapiz · 2022-08-28 11:03
I'm currently thinking about taking over my Zettelkasten Workflow with Emacs.
I've used r/ObsidianMD for a long time now, but it seems like it would be a pain to replace the Handwriting capability that I have with Obisidian apps on my tablet etc.
I didn't do digital handwriting for a while, but I want to have it, just in case.
So do you know of any .el or package to handwrite using Emacs?
I really like the idea of one personally customized Program for everything, it sucks to have wasted knowledge about specific programs that I change so damn frequently.

This seems like it would require a custom app, and since most “emacs” mobile apps focus on just providing org as a write up language and don’t actually try to reimplement emacs itself, I suspect it would be hard.
If you have an iPad I think the best you’ll get is an image of your handwriting, or your handwriting converted to typed text.
The best way I’ve found to actually get emacs on a mobile device is to run it on a VPS and then connect via an app like Blink via mosh/ssh, and that gives you full (terminal) emacs, but those apps (terminal) also aren’t designed to be interacted with with a stylus.

Is this a notary done digital?

I looked at this too. There was a random package that used Write by stylus labs as a pop-up then embedded the image into an org file. But it was more proof of concept.
For me, I use [Write](http://www.styluslabs.com/) for maintaining class notes and export to PDF. Then, I use org-noter to link the PDF to an org-roam file where I can tag, add links, and other typed notes after the fact and get my lecture notes integrated into note system. Write has an app and webapp too for cross platform compatability.
In my opinion emacs is a poor choice for what is a vector image capture software like handwriting but an excellent information manager for tagging and organizing things using text org files.

May I ask what one gotta do to link a PDF to an org-roam file using org-noter?
st0rm79 · 2022-08-28 17:06
Nothing special. Assuming you have [org-noter](https://github.com/weirdNox/org-noter) installed, create your org-roam node. Then create a headline. Run M-x org-noter (or whatever shortcut you have bound this to) on the headline. Emacs will prompt you to fill in your /path/to/pdf. It creates a property to save the file and page location.
That's it. Emacs will open a frame that will sync page locations to notes you take. Once you are done, save and close the frame. Looking up the org-roam node will bring up the notes and running org-noter will bring up the document page associated with the notes. You can link multiple documents per roam node or reference the same document across multiple roam nodes.
Also, this supports pdf, microsoft/open document, and epub with novel.el and DocView modes.

why not just Emacs in Termux?
(edit: or Emacs in iSH on iOS.)
emacsomancer · 2022-08-28 17:27
Does the Obsidian one translate to plaintext or to PDF?
BobKoss · 2022-08-28 17:30
Where do you keep the pdf that the org-roam link refers to?

You could, not sure how easy it is to install extensions into something like iSH, it’s probably also pretty slow.
I also prefer to offload most of the processing to a remote machine that can hold all my git repos, be connected to VPN, etc without draining my iPad battery even more.
st0rm79 · 2022-08-28 17:56
I keep them all in a folder called PDF since I download a lot of papers to reference (PhD student). I'm also putting together a bibliography setup for writing papers that will reference this folder, but I haven't had the time to tinker this week.
emacsomancer · 2022-08-28 20:43
It probably is slow. (My wife uses iSH, and certain parts of \`yt-dlp\` seem far slower on iSH than under Termux.)
It's a good experience in Termux though, FWIW. (Emacs, I mean.)
andents776 · 2022-08-28 20:44
That’s good to know, doesn’t seem to be on iOS though
emacsomancer · 2022-08-28 20:47
Yeah, iSH is as close as it gets on iOS, so probably irrelevant for your use cases.

You need to differ online handwriting recognition (recognizing while writing) and offline handwriting recognition (processing files or images that contain handwriting).
The only online handwriting I have read of were part of closed solutions like Microsoft [OneNote](https://karl-voit.at/2018/04/21/end-of-OneNote/) or [Evernote](https://karl-voit.at/2018/04/21/end-of-OneNote/) ([cloud](https://karl-voit.at/cloud/)) which are a no-go to me personally.
BOOX e-ink-tablets do have offline handwriting recognition but in my opinion this is not more than a demo feature. It lacks practical use, quality and a decent correction method.
I'd love to have good offline handwriting recognition and I'd even pay for it. So far, I don't see this option yet.

I see, that helped a lot! Thank you for the detailed response, my friend!

Hope this helps.

But otherwise.

Google docs and Microsoft office both have a decent OCR (optical character recognitiom) feature
