> Colorized palette names how is it different from, say, https://github.com/Fanael/highlight-defined or https://github.com/Fuco1/fontify-face ?
TheFrenchPoulp · 2022-08-27 14:04
Didn't know about those, I've been using rainbow-mode for the longest time
deaddyfreddy · 2022-08-27 15:14
thanks for highlighting another alternative!

Can they pick the color names from the themes color palette?! /u/deaddyfreddy /u/TheFrenchPoulp - Fontify-face looks like it does that nice !! - How about highlight-defined? Edit: It doesn't seem to... can you show it working?

deaddyfreddy · 2022-08-28 00:32
does it highlight faces?
00-11 · 2022-08-28 01:23
I guess you mean face names (using their faces). No; sorry, misread the context. Will delete. (It highlights variables &/or function names known to be defined (or not known to be.)

I'll try them out.

So I better ask here, and save dev time on any _new_ tools. /u/TheFrenchPoulp, /u/deaddyfreddy, /u/00-11 do you have any other recommended tools for working with theme development? Especially things which tighten up the feedback loop. Also, what tools do you wish you had for theme development? Maybe I can build something which doesn't already exist. EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/XWg4GYm - for what Autothemer-colorize does that's new.

I'm actually about to release a porting of the community material themes from VS Code that uses autothemer. My workflow is to have both the emacs and VS Code versions side by side and then go "well this is blue on one and yellow on the other" and then adjust. There was also a lot of trial and error for stuff that didn't port over. The biggest problem is one I would describe as "what is this face called?". I used System Crafters tooltip strategy where if you do M-x describe-face, the default suggestion is the face at the feature, but that doesn't work when the face changes if the cursor is on it. Something that would allow me to put the mouse onto a face without clicking and getting a face out of it, that would have helped tremendously.

Ok, so I've had an opportunity to check out Highlight Defined and Fontify face running locally. I'm glad to say that Autothemer is bringing something new to the table. While Fontify face is doing something I really wanted, and colorizing mentions of the face name. (so big thanks /u/deaddyfreddy) - it doesn't colorize the palette color name variables from the autothemer theme in development. I thought maybe highlight-defined would do what I'm doing here but it didn't seem to do that. TBF looking at the code, it definitely doesn't seem to be doing the same thing as `autothemer-colorize`. So, what autothemer is now doing is highlighting the palette variable names from the theme with their color values. I made a new imgur post to illustrate things more clearly. https://imgur.com/a/XWg4GYm So hopefully it's clear what `autothemer-colorize` does, it'd be good to get feedback, suggestions, notes, etc. /u/00-11 /u/TheFrenchPoulp /u/deaddyfreddy FYI this is in the develop branch of https://github.com/jasonm23/autothemer for today. It'll be in the release version later today hopefully.

Hi /u/Acebulf did you already try out `describe-char` (default binding `C-u C-x C-=`) Fontify faces does help too, showing the face name decorated with it's face spec. https://github.com/Fuco1/fontify-face Would be happy to entertain a feature request over on https://github.com/jasonm23/autothemer/issues BTW if you are making variant themes (darker, lighter etc.) read the Autothemer README section TVA, I'm trying to hash out an architecture convention for theme variants.

Oh, btw I made some little helper functions - pretty basic stuff ... (defun describe-char-here-untouched () "Describe the char at point, but first move the point away. Move back to point after describing the char." (interactive) (let ((p (point))) (if (= (point-min) p) (goto-char (point-max)) (goto-char (point-min))) (describe-char p) (goto-char p))) (defun describe-char-next (prefix) "Describe the char next to point (+1). Universal PREFiX can be used to describe char at N positons from `point'." (interactive "p") (let ((p (point))) (describe-char (+ p prefix)))) (defun describe-char-previous (prefix) "Describe the char previous from point (-1). Universal PREFIX can be used to describe char at N positons from `point'." (interactive "p") (let ((p (point))) (describe-char (- p prefix)))) The prefix is expected to be a number of chars away from point, if the docstrings are misleading at all.
