It's happening! Emacs is being absorbed into my being
thephatmaster · 2022-08-26 13:39
So I've been playing with Doom Emacs and Org+Roam taking notes at work.
Today I'm in some video editing software, made a mistake and hit "jk", "u" to undo
bjaminar · 2022-08-26 13:58
I am constantly typing “jk” in every possible text editor.
thephatmaster · 2022-08-26 14:34
Lol, I shouldn't probably let on that many of my files have ":w" here and there too - damned modal editing
compu_musicologist · 2022-08-26 15:26
I regularly try to use C-SPC to mark regions and M-w to copy text outside Emacs…
tangonov · 2022-08-26 15:45
C-s and C-y are killing me in Firefox
thephatmaster · 2022-08-26 15:55
I only found out about C-SPC yesterday - life changing
thephatmaster · 2022-08-26 15:56
I wonder if there's a plugin, I tried Vim keys for MSWord once (an Autohotkey script I think)

Yeah I recently switched to evil from vanilla and wow modal editing feels significantly more productive
fk00 · 2022-08-26 16:48
For non-vimers, what does jk do? I know u is for undo.
thephatmaster · 2022-08-26 16:57
Its bound to ESC on some configs, so that gets you into "normal" mode so you can "u" undo. Undo doesn't work while in insert mode (that I know of I'm a noob)
colemaker360 · 2022-08-26 16:59
jk is a common alias for ESC in vi-like editors. It’s a quick way to get you back to normal mode with keys already under your fingers on home row.
thetemp_ · 2022-08-26 16:59
Next-line and previous-line.
jandrusk · 2022-08-26 17:01
lol, resistance is futile
edumerco · 2022-08-26 17:26
It's the other way around really: you are being absorbed into emacs.
;DDD
0xMii · 2022-08-26 17:30
M-w with Cmd mapped to Meta on macOS is dangerous, because Cmd-W is close window there. I hit that on reflex all the time.
timmymayes · 2022-08-26 17:33
I"m a default user so Ctrl+n has led to many a random chrome window.
tangonov · 2022-08-26 17:54
I am currently using StumpWM which can allow key transformations on the window manager level. I will play with it and get back to you later
samrjack · 2022-08-26 17:56
This reason and this reason alone is the reason I don’t touch the Cmd key for mappings in emacs. It’s more comfortable but can be quite dangerous 😆 .
thesolitaire · 2022-08-26 19:11
C-w gets me like this all the time in Windows (or Linux for that matter).
thesolitaire · 2022-08-26 19:12
You're going to start missing it in every other app you use. I know I do, because, sadly, I can't use emacs everywhere.
Gwaerondor · 2022-08-26 19:42
Disabling the C-s shortcut to send mails in outlook is always my first order of business when I am unfortunate enough to work in Windows.
C-s and C-w in Firefox are the bane of my existence
lexa_ · 2022-08-26 19:57
There is [tridactyl](https://github.com/tridactyl/tridactyl) with [emacs bindings](https://github.com/jumper047/tridactyl_emacs_config/blob/main/emacs_bindings). It is far from perfect, but it brings some resemblance of Emacs hotkeys in Firefox.
SlowValue · 2022-08-26 20:53
Changing modifier keys in firefox (FF) helped me. to do so:
1. enter settings list `about:config`
2. change `ui.key.accelKey` to value `18`, [then FF uses `alt` instead of `ctrl`](https://kb.mozillazine.org/Ui.key.generalAccessKey) `M-w` will now close tab instead of `C-w`
3. change `ui.key.chromeAccess` to value 6, [then FF uses `Ctrl+Alt` instead of `Alt` for sub functionality](https://kb.mozillazine.org/Ui.key.chromeAccess). E.g. toggling whole words in search dialog, now with `C-M-w` instead of `M-w`. This is necessary, because we are using `M-` already, see step 2.
Ping: u/Gwaerondor u/lexa_ , maybe this helps you too.
yoogui · 2022-08-26 20:56
The same with "jj" for me. In every text editor
Snaut97 · 2022-08-26 20:59
To fix this, instead of "jk" then ":w", you can use "SPC f s" in normal mode in doom Emacs
LetterheadAncient205 · 2022-08-26 21:00
Emacs is everything. We're all just macros.

I just started a new job teaching web development at a prep school.
The school requires the teachers to use the same IDE as the students, and their curriculum is very specific, so I have to use Brackets for the frontend course I teach, and PHPStorm for the backend course.
PHPStorm already supports emacs keybindings, but the first thing I did on Brackets was find a plugin to enable emacs keybindings there.
goodevilgenius · 2022-08-27 00:25
> sadly, I can't use emacs everywhere.
Sounds like you're not trying hard enough 😜
yep808 · 2022-08-27 01:02
I regularly type :w RET when I'm in Microsoft Word... hahaha.
shizzy0 · 2022-08-27 04:08
‘jk’ means just kidding in vim.
lilytex · 2022-08-27 04:56
Evil user here, sometimes I send :wq or ZZ when chatting
thephatmaster · 2022-08-27 06:54
That's useful to know, and the semantics work.
nnoobb · 2022-08-27 08:34
C-n in Firefox also helps me explode.
UtamaruMonster · 2022-08-27 09:29
C-g, C-k, C-a, C-w - always hit those everywhere 🤣
birchturtle · 2022-08-27 11:32
Mmyeaah it’s kinda up and down what it means
HeiWiper · 2022-08-28 08:58
When you think of it, there isn't really a point of hitting C-g outside of Emacs, but for some reason I still do...
Marlex31 · 2022-08-28 16:18
You can configure evil so that undo works in insert mode!
I don't have the snippet at hand, but I have it bound to C-u and the evil want fine undo option set to true.
thephatmaster · 2022-08-28 16:24
Cool
