What is the origin of Doom Emacs name?

tonystark29 · 2022-08-23 17:37
I know Doom is a game, but Emacs is a programming environment (I know it's a lot more than that), it's kind of unrelated. Is it made by the developers of Doom? Does it have any connection to Doom, or did the makers of Doom Emacs just happen to like the game Doom? Maybe I'm reading too much into it. I can't find any straight answers for this online.

John Carmack is working on it between consulting at Facebook for Occulus Rift and trying to solve Artificial General Intelligence. Hopefully he'll drop one of those pursuits so he can put more time into it.

Totally clueless about C and compilers, all I could do was peek at it from time to time and hope I’d absorb its secrets if I stared hard enough. It didn’t work, but it sure jump-started by gamedev addiction. > >So “Doom Emacs” was what you got when you combined childhood, demon-carnage nostalgia, terrible naming sense, and the sneaking suspicion that Emacs is the unwritten tenth circle Dante censored for humanity’s protection. > >I’ve doomed us all.

Nostalgia is a very, very powerful beast.

My guess is that central to Doom is Evil. Evil is a description of a nature while doom is a catastrophic destiny usually of an evil nature. “It is your destiny!”

Very interesting, thank you!

Evil is the text editor that Emacs, an otherwise fine OS, always needed.

I have a suspicion that hlissner is actually a fully functional AGI built by Carmack in his spare time. Just a theory though.

Mmm, he's far too friendly and active in the help channels. It's been three years now, it's simply not believable anymore.

ikr obviously the dude is Skynet and we all have to use Doom emacs or the missles launch.
