mu4e was what allowed me to move my email handling from Mutt to Emacs. :-) Notmuch didn't have all the functionality i wanted, and i couldn't work out how to set up Gnus for my workflow, despite spending an extended period of time trying to do so. It only took around an hour to get a basic but functional mu4e setup.
MagpieMars · 2022-08-23 03:43
I use gnus. It comes with Emacs and works very well with minimal configuration needed
Can connect via IMAP without the need for a third-party backed
ElCondorHerido · 2022-08-23 04:18
Mu4e by a mile. But now that I can't access my work email because of Office 365 oauth bs, I just can't use email in emacs. And it's driving me fucking crazy.
LowerSeaworthiness · 2022-08-23 04:38
I concocted a Python script from existing oauth support that lets me use mu4e for my work email. Let me make it presentable and I’ll post it.
Oh, and I obviously use mu4e too. I used vm for many years but my RMAIL file was just becoming too big. Plus, mbsync lets me sync with Exchange, Gmail, IMAP, and O365 and still use the familiar emacs interface.
sec-agent · 2022-08-23 04:47
You can use DavMail to handle Office 365 oauth. It runs locally on your machine, handles all comms with the Exchange servers, and could interface with Emacs (and any other mail/calendar servcies) via IMAP.
My set up is:
* DavMail
* mbsync + mu4e
* vdirsyncer + khalel
ftrx · 2022-08-23 05:36
Notmuch, *far* more faster and with a nicer UI than Mu4E. On contrary Mu4E get more built-in multi account support (notmuch support multiple account out of the box, BUT do consider them a single one, Mu4E allow to "switch the UI" from one to another) and a nicer separate webkit-based html mail pdf renderer.
I've used both, but in the end the tagging ability of notmuch + muchsync to have the same mails on multiple machines makes my choice.

Wanderlust!
hkjels · 2022-08-23 07:00
I’ve only used Notmuch. What am I missing out on? I read about deleting emails, but I’ve sorted that
flexibeast · 2022-08-23 07:04
Well, i last used it over seven years ago, so although there were a few ways in which it didn't suit my specific workflow, i can't really remember the details now .... i think maybe one of the issues might have been that i have a folder-based workflow, and that notmuch has a 'view'-based workflow? But my memory might be wrong, and even if it's not, notmuch might have changed quite a bit since then. :-)
anaumann · 2022-08-23 07:05
\+1 for wanderlust.. I wanted to like gnus, but wanderlust offered the least resistance.. it just feels like any other mail client outside of emacs :D
publicvoit · 2022-08-23 10:39
mutt since a couple of decades for personal. Since my personal mail setup runs on a remote server in the console, any Emacs-based method doesn't provide me any advantage. I even use vim to write my emails there. ;-)
[Evolution (after switching from Thunderbird)](https://karl-voit.at/2021/06/01/Thunderbird-to-Evolution/) for business usage. I can't use any Emacs-based mail solution here because of their lack of handling invitations (creation, curation, replying).
ElCondorHerido · 2022-08-23 12:57
I tried davmail, but haven't been ablento get it to work. Apparently, I need authorization from my it administrator and they don't have a good track record for letting people use non-mainstream apps
ElCondorHerido · 2022-08-23 12:59
Please do. Thanks
dekksh · 2022-08-23 16:21
Notmuch works out of the box for my needs.
ElCondorHerido · 2022-08-23 19:49
Would you care to share your mbsyncrc file (without id information) to see how to set it up with davmail? I'm getting some timeout issues that apparently are mbsync's fault

sec-agent · 2022-08-24 03:56
Yeah, here is what I have in my .mbsyncrc:
BufferLimit 100M
IMAPAccount Exchange
Host localhost
Port 1143
User user-name@company-domain.com
AuthMechs LOGIN
SSLType None
UseKeychain yes
PipelineDepth 10
Timeout 0
IMAPStore outlook-remote
Account Exchange
MaildirStore outlook-local
Path ~/.mail/exchange/
Inbox ~/.mail/exchange/INBOX/
SubFolders Verbatim
Channel outlook
Far :outlook-remote:
Near :outlook-local:
Patterns *
Create Both
Expunge Both
SyncState *
A few notes on some parts of the config:
* SSLType could be set to None cause all communication is done locally.
* I had to set Timeout to 0 because some of my emails were too heavy and they failed to sync with the defaults. I didn't want to bother picking the right threshold (0 = unlimited). This could backfire in the future if mbsync gets stuck in a sync state but I haven't encountered that just yet. Something to keep in mind.
* Everything else is just a boilerplate config.

I sometimes need to access email from a terminal (i.e. not a graphical environment). Davmail cannot be used in such an environment. Does anybody know of a text based alternative?
davmail works very well otherwise, I should add.
sec-agent · 2022-08-30 15:43
You are, maybe, misunderstanding the purpose of DavMail in this set up. It's not used to directly access email, it's there to act as a gateway between your internal tools and Exchange. It "implements" IMAP/CalDav protocols in front of MS's Exchange server. That just lets you pick the right tool for the job without worrying whether that tool works with Microsoft's stack or not.
DavMail can also run as a daemon and be configured through dotfiles (that's the way I have it set up.)
To actually access your email from a terminal you can use **mbsync**, which pulls the emails from a remote server to your local machine, and **mu**, which indexes the local copies and provides the ability to view them either from your termainl or from emacs (with mu4e)
simbledress · 2022-09-03 05:13
I hope you know that Gnus has [some](https://inbox.vuxu.org/ding/87k10bp71u.fsf@ims.uni-hannover.de/) [support](https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-orgmode/2020-08/msg00154.html).
publicvoit · 2022-09-04 21:02
No I didn't.
Thanks for the links, they moved directly into my knowledge base so that I may send them out for other people.
If I would switch to an Emacs-based email workflow, I most likely would start with notmuch and not GNUS in order to get a substantial advantage over my current workflows and an easier setup phase. Therefore, I could not profit from this GNUs functionality.
At the moment, I am able to use Emacs for composing emails (after my Xubuntu LTS upgrade allowed me to switch away from [the flatpak version of Evolution I was relying on previously](https://karl-voit.at/2021/06/01/Thunderbird-to-Evolution/)). At least a bit of Emacs here. Note to myself: start using that feature more and more.
LowerSeaworthiness · 2022-09-05 18:46
Sorry to take so long. Cleaning up led me down the rabbit hole of re-deriving how I got there. Anyway, my key reference is https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Isync#Using_XOAUTH2 . It's on the Arch Linux wiki, but I used the instructions on Ubuntu and MacOS with some adaptation.
It'll direct you to install the oauth2token python module and set it up; use the Thunderbird client id and secret that are mentioned just above. In the usual case, you then can use oauth2create to start up and then oauth2get will fetch an access token for mail and use the refresh token to fetch a new one when needed.
My company's setup, for some reason, has no refresh token. What I wrote was a little script to automatically call oauth2create when oauth2get fails. It's at https://gist.github.com/pcf000/54a65a224d18b3010fe733a465faea24 and is about four lines of real work with a mess of support code.
I did try DavMail, but didn't get it to work. I don't remember why; could have been corporate policy restrictions, could have been that I didn't try hard enough.
ballfresno · 2022-09-28 14:50
No, I have not misunderstood the purpose of davmail. The problem is that multi-factor authentication requires it to open up a web browser and hence needs a graphical interface. I have no problem (once authenticated) reading/sending emails using whatever tool (gnus in Emacs in my case).
sec-agent · 2022-09-28 15:52
I misundertood your original comment then. Thanks for responding back.
