Could you please suggest theme for Emacs + Org mode?

inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 10:03
I am a new user and trying to use it for my daily note-taking and editing work. I am currently using vanilla or what comes with default. **Solution:** * You can find a great collection at [https://emacsthemes.com](https://emacsthemes.com/) and some mention from there, * [https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilbgzgn/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilbgzgn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) * [https://github.com/doomemacs/themes](https://github.com/doomemacs/themes) * [https://github.com/protesilaos/ef-themes](https://github.com/protesilaos/ef-themes) * [https://github.com/emacsfodder/](https://github.com/emacsfodder/) and some mention from there, * [https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilfr13v/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilfr13v/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) * [https://github.com/rougier/nano-emacs](https://github.com/rougier/nano-emacs) * [https://github.com/erikbackman/mindre-theme/](https://github.com/erikbackman/mindre-theme/) * Modus vivendi with tweaks, * [https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilfn0oi/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wupi4i/comment/ilfn0oi/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) **Credits:** All of whom were participated in the comment.

Take a look at https://emacsthemes.com It has a gallery of lots of themes. The builtin modus-vivendi and modus-operandi themes are very thoroughly adapted for a lot of packages, especialy org.

I tend to like themes with a dark background, although one challenge with org mode is that buffers can be very colorful, so you either embrace that and get a lively snappy theme or something with more muted colors. In the former camp I really like monokai and monokai-pro (they also automatically make your org headers larger in font, but I think you can toggle that if you don’t like it). In the latter camp I’d suggest taking a look at tango-dark, wombat, (both built-in) or inkpot. If you prefer themes with a light background, I think the built-in light-blue and leuven look particularly good in org mode

Here are the themes in my rotation. I switch among themes multiple times per day (mostly due to ambient lighting conditions). For built-in themes that are good for Org Mode, Leuven, Modus-Operandi, and Modus-Vivendi work well. # Dark themes - https://github.com/bbatsov/solarized-emacs - https://github.com/bbatsov/zenburn-emacs - https://github.com/belak/emacs-grayscale-theme - https://github.com/dracula/emacs - https://github.com/jonathanchu/atom-one-dark-theme - https://github.com/ksjogo/labburn-theme (LabBurn is a less saturated version of ZenBurn) - https://github.com/muirmanders/emacs-nova-theme (my personal favorite) # Green themes (makes me feel like A Real Hacker) - https://github.com/aalpern/emacs-color-theme-green-phosphor - https://github.com/rbanffy/green-screen-emacs - https://github.com/emacs-jp/replace-colorthemes # Low-contrast themes - https://github.com/m00natic/anti-zenburn-theme - https://github.com/mswift42/silkworm-theme

Check out the ef-themes by Prot. https://github.com/protesilaos/ef-themes

Thats cool, I wish I knew about this site sooner. Thanks for sharing

Thank you.

The built-in leuven theme is very nice for Org mode.
tmting · 2022-08-22 15:02
[Doom Themes](https://github.com/doomemacs/themes) is also great. It's a huge pack and pretty well done
LordOfSwines · 2022-08-22 16:19
If you want something without a lot of colors then here’s my theme: [https://github.com/erikbackman/mindre-theme/](https://github.com/erikbackman/mindre-theme/)
codefake · 2022-08-22 16:38
Leuvan is still the best in org-mode, imo.
aqjo · 2022-08-22 16:39
I suggest thinking about your fonts too, as they affect the aesthetics of the theme you use.

Ef-themes
romsouza · 2022-08-22 17:17
Not a theme but take a look at org-modern from minad
tungd · 2022-08-22 17:28
I’ve used the built-in deeper-blue theme exclusively this year. Love it.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:08
It looks similar to vscode.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:10
I was looking for different color for different type of header as well as font size.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:14
Still pretty new to emacs, so I want to continue now with the font comes with a theme suitable for my need.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:18
Is that what comes with default installation without any change?
LordOfSwines · 2022-08-22 18:19
Different font sizes really shouldn't be part of a theme IMO. This is easily configured by the user of org and not something theme authors should bother with.
doolio_ · 2022-08-22 18:20
Yes, amongst others. `M-x load-theme` to see the available list.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:22
Sorry, I am pretty new to this. Thanks for the info.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-22 18:23
Thanks will try that 👍

Ooo, gonna try these.

I use the built-in `modus-vivendi` theme, with some tweaks to lower the contrast. By default it's a very accessible theme, but I like a more muted style. I'm extremely happy with it. (use-package emacs :custom (modus-themes-subtle-line-numbers t) (modus-themes-syntax '(alt-syntax faint)) (modus-themes-diffs 'desaturated) (modus-themes-hl-line 'intense) (modus-themes-bold-constructs nil) :hook (modus-themes-after-load-theme . my:modus-theme-tweaks) (after-init . my:modus-theme-tweaks) :bind ("<f5>" . modus-themes-toggle) :config (load-theme 'modus-vivendi)) (defun my:modus-theme-tweaks () (set-face-attribute 'default nil :background (modus-themes-color 'bg-alt) :foreground (modus-themes-color 'fg-dim)) (set-face-attribute 'font-lock-function-name-face nil :foreground (modus-themes-color 'cyan-alt-other-faint)) (set-face-attribute 'font-lock-variable-name-face nil :foreground (modus-themes-color 'fg-main)))
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-23 09:21
Thanks :)
ocodo · 2022-08-23 10:11
Have a look at the themes on https://github.com/emacsfodder/ - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-orangey-bits - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-sakura - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-soothe-theme - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-vegetative - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-cyanometric - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-darktooth - https://github.com/emacsfodder/emacs-theme-creamsody and many more. /u/HM0880 - vegetative, cyanometric, orange-sody are all mono (ish) green, cyan, orange CRT-like themes. So you can do more feeling like a _real_ hacker.
ocodo · 2022-08-23 10:16
Give gruvbox, darktooth or creamsody a try. They're all dark and based on muted colors and have variants for darker / contrast. (oh and Gruvbox has 3 light versions too.)
NDcodes · 2022-08-23 12:50
Thanks a lot! I'll give these a try
HM0880 · 2022-08-24 15:45
Haha, thanks! I forgot about orange CRT, which is a great retro vibe. If you want to leave Emacs, https://github.com/Swordfish90/cool-retro-term is amusing for a few minutes; not sure I would daily-drive it though.
ocodo · 2022-08-24 19:46
I have ncmpcpp running in CRT, but cyan flavored.
emacsomancer · 2022-08-25 01:15
And his modus themes as well.
