Hey Windows users, try MacType

GeekSync · 2022-08-20 02:51
I am very particular about how text appears in the text editor. I cannot compromise on poorly rendered font. In an attempt to make text in emacs on Windows look crisp, I tried several fonts. I blamed the fonts that they are not good and kept trying different fonts. Then I installed MacType. The before and after of using MacType is huge. I do not need any custom fonts out on the internet there and was settled on Consolas. So if you are like me or having issues try installing MacType. [https://www.mactype.net/](https://www.mactype.net/) Note: Make sure that the MacType service is running before you launch emacs. I run the emacs server in the startup and it didn't render the fonts properly. I had to make sure of this dependency. **Edit: Added before-after images** [**https://imgur.com/a/htf6bBl**](https://imgur.com/a/htf6bBl)

The website has zero info. None. Nah. Consolas with my emacs config looks great on mac and windows, but there is a certain something that text looks better somehow…. But for mactype, never heard of it. If its open source or talks about their algo or technoques or anything - maybe. But closed sourxe I guess? Secret beta? Maybe free now and closed and $ later when you’re hooked? Nah

There's a link to GitHub, and the repo has a license file, GPL 3. https://github.com/snowie2000/MacType

hmm. very interesting. i was also bothered by the lack of information, but i was curious, so i tried it out. there is a change. it's very hard to see. before: https://i.imgur.com/ECOm48G.jpg after: https://i.imgur.com/S0cGVNW.jpg i couldn't even tell at the beginning whether there was even a difference. there is a very small improvement (i think, haha). i consider myself a huge type snob, so most people would not even care or notice. still, it's very interesting—an improvement is an improvement, and i thank you for bringing it to my attention

Thanks for the research! The latter shot adds subpixel antialiasing and is noticeably higher quality. Funny thing is, subpixel antialiasing support was actually *removed* with macOS Mojave, which is why text now looks like crap on non-Retina displays. So MacType does seem to improve font rendering, the opposite of what one would expect given the name. ;)

Your text looks good without MacType so you should be good. I will post my before and after when I get back to my computer.

Windows with a 4K UHD monitor renders fonts pretty well
pushqrex · 2022-12-18 06:04
Sorry but does it cause Emacs to flicker for you too?
GeekSync · 2022-12-18 13:42
Yes it flickers
pushqrex · 2022-12-18 17:02
Sad the difference in text clarity is a lot. I managed to reduce the flicker by setting clipboxhack to zero in Mac type config but it's still flicker a lot
GeekSync · 2022-12-18 19:20
Yeah, I am going to live with the flicker.
pushqrex · 2022-12-26 17:20
just wanted to let you know that the flickering is completely gone with Emacs 29 because it includes the new Windows Double Buffering patch set, and it looks beautiful with MacType

Wow, yesterday I was thinking about this issue but thanks you mentioned this. I will use the 29 version. Happy Holidays bro.
