I appreciate Prot's work, but this video crystallizes the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words".

He's getting out of hand. How much further is he going to push Emacs!

I love prot's themes, but in my case (post PRK eye surgery) high contrast themes are actually hard for me to read, rather than the opposite, which is ironic considering their careful design for accessibility. Otherwise I'd use modus-vivendi and never look back.

A zenburn version of these themes would be nice :)

He posted this week a blog post with the pictures. https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2022-08-15-intro-ef-themes-emacs/
nv-elisp · 2022-08-18 20:00
Thanks. That's definitely more to the point than a 30 minute video demonstration.

If I remember correctly, he mentioned in one of his videos or blogs that he does videos to practice English, as he doesn’t have English speakers close by to practice

These new ones are lower contrast, so they might work for you. I actually don't find what you're saying too surprising. Most of the research on readability I've found actually pins the optimal contrast level for people with normal vision in the 8-12x range, after which readability actually decreases. (For people with some forms of impaired vision, there's no question that very high contrast is desirable, but that's not the average case.)

Fair enough, I was just making the point that promotion is best served succinct. I'm sure he has other videos which are more substantial.

The ef-day theme looks like a really nice low-contrast theme. Except it's not! It's crisp and clear high-contrast without any distractions. Amazing work again by Prot.

I like these themes - I'm using 'autumn' on my Windows emacs. Thanks for the effort you put into these Prot. Does anyone know if there is a way to reduce the size of the heading fonts? They are massive on my screen - may be my set-up, but not sure?
tsdwm52 · 2022-08-19 07:02
Apparently for Emacs 28.

Which factor do the modus themes have? (Also, which number are you exactly referring to? Contrast ratio?)
ave_63 · 2022-08-19 13:39
I also thought high contrast was too much. But I realized I could just turn the monitor brightness down, on a high contrast theme, to get it down to medium contrast, with the added bonus that websites and everything else that is normally high contrast is now medium contrast too.

All three light themes looks pretty good and thought-out, except all are pretty low-contrast, aren't they? Perhaps it's just an impression driven by his particular desktop settings, I don't know. But his previous themes paid a lot of attention to contrast.
zodmaner · 2022-08-20 13:27
These are lovely themes indeed! I just switched from Modus Operandi to ef-theme-spring, and I'm loving it! The contrast, while lower then the Modus-* themes, are still high enough that it's still easy for my old eyes. Thank you for your contributions, Prot!

> Does anyone know if there is a way to reduce the size of the heading fonts? They are massive on my screen - may be my set-up, but not sure? The official [manual](https://protesilaos.com/emacs/ef-themes#h:a7a02817-e324-43e9-a7d8-fde024530af6) of ef-themes contains section on how to config and change the size of headings.
blixabloxa · 2022-08-20 14:27
Thanks. I'll have a read.
hydrobea · 2022-08-27 18:29
The minimum version has dropped to Emacs 27.1 according to the changelog: [https://protesilaos.com/emacs/ef-themes-changelog](https://protesilaos.com/emacs/ef-themes-changelog)
tsdwm52 · 2022-08-30 15:49
Thanks! They work well here.
MrMelankoli · 2022-11-30 12:38
I've been skimming through the docs, does anyone know if there is a variable for choose a dimmed not so high contrast mode line? It is just to strong for me across all the themes.
