I cloned the github repo of emacs today (version 29.0.50) and configured it with the following flags
\--with-native-compilation --with-pgtk --with-xwidgets
Everything works fine, and I am even able to browse wikipedia. But when I try to open youtube within the xwidget-webkit browser, it loads to 89% and then crashes emacs. When I look in the terminal where I originally launched emacs, I find the error:
Unable to configure xdg-desktop-portal
access in the WebKit sandbox: GApplication is required.
I then recompiled by adding --with-x-toolkit=gtk3 but I got the same behavior. Does anyone else run into this problem?

I exported WEBKIT\_FORCE\_SANDBOX="0" and youtube does not crash emacs anymore. However, videos are still not playing, stuck in the loading screen. Is this a webkit problem?

I am experiencing [the same](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/xmkqhg/xwidgetwebkit_working_but_crashes_emacs_when_i_go/) issue. I was wondering if you had a working configuration prior to emacs 29 with xwidgets-webkit and/or if you have come up with a solution by now.

I think all I did was run emacs with some parameters for sandboxing. I could get it to work but youtube videos still never loaded. I dont remember exactly, but I figure if you google emacs sandbox webkit something shoud come up

Yes, that is how I run it now. I can browse, but not play videos (they won't load).

are you using debian? I have always wondered if this was a distro problem but i was too lazy to try another distro
HumanBrainMapper · 2022-11-19 00:48
Ubuntu 20.04 actually. But yeah, debian based. That might be the issue. I have not tried it on another distro either.

I just tried in a docker container running arch and I still had the same problem, so i have no clue wtf is going on

Thanks for trying. I wonder if xwidget-webkit is being actively developed, also considering the lack of responses to this thread.

yeah, tbh it seems to have been abandoned. Besides youtube its workable as a browser, but the xwwp package that was trying to make it into a nyxt-type thing also looks deserted. This was really all I was missing to have my os in emacs.

Same. I never tried the xwwp package, because it seemed overkill. It would have been super nice to have a good browser inside emacs. I am not sure why this is not further developed as there is quite some development going on with emacs: tree-sitter and eglot have just been implemented as core emacs features, which is nice.
