I am using arch linux and Emacs 29.0.5, and having some issues with emojis (Noto Color Emoji). Most emojis work just fine, but some of them like ✏️ (I assume multicharacter) break and are way too thin. How to rectify?

I had a similar issue recently with Noto Color Emoji.
I was even getting into scenarios where characters immediately after certain emojis were overlapping the emoji. Try changing your font and see if the issue persists.

Yeah, this is my case. If I have multiple multi-character emojis, then they overlap.

Worth mentioning via `report-emacs-bug`.

This is a known issue with HarfBuzz 5.x. [I originally reported the issue](https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2022-07/msg02241.html) and [Protesilaos recently reported the current issue](https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2022-08/msg00757.html) that you're also experiencing.
[Some recent messages](https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnu-emacs/2022-08/msg00945.html) seem to show that there might be a patch soon to fix it. In the meantime I'm solving the problem by installing HarfBuzz 4.4.1-1 instead.
I hope that helps!

That definitely helped, thank you.

Just to follow up, this has now been fixed for `emacs-28` with commit `ae348b719e8f1c29c3ee6ed5d723326b3bc54883`. It's working for me but as far as I can tell this has yet to be merged into master, so as you're running Emacs 29.0.5 you might have to wait until it's merged.
