New evil group?

quantum_mattress · 2022-08-10 00:48
Hi all. I’m thinking we really need to split off the evil - and other specially packages - build posts. I’m an old-time, vanilla emacs user (who did start with ex and vi) but this has nothing to do with one of the other being better. It’s just there’s so much activity for evil and space, etc, that I keep end up reading long posts before I realize it doesn’t apply to what I use. And thoughts on this? Since it’s basically voluntary on the part of all the specialty build users. Thanks!

Yes, I don't think we have enough activity that it is overwhelming. I agree that I would like to see both sides. That seems like an odd choice of words. 😁

There are already evil and spacemacs specific groups. Both are still a package and a configuration framework for Emacs so it’s still Emacs’s fault for it to be customizable that much. Many package-specific issues can be solved just knowing Emacs. Tagging posts would be enough IMO. Writing better titles might help too.

I agree with you. since there are subreddits for r/spacemacs and r/evilmode (not to mention r/orgmode) I wish people would post those topics there. I have absolutely no interest in these topics (especially org mode (yes I know, blasphemy :-)). Obviously, people ignore the the subreddits though, so we're stuck. Is there a way for a user to add filters in reddit? Many Usenet newsreaders (rn, trn) could do this. I'm new to Reddit and haven't found a way to do this yet.

I'm in a similar situation, but when I see Spacemacs or Doom or Evil or whatever... I just move on. I think it's usually pretty clear without spending a bunch of time reading the whole post.

Use reddit's flairs?
pajuch · 2022-08-10 08:16
Nice idea
Alan_Shutko · 2022-08-10 14:42
That is what I was thinking too.

I don’t see how to filter based on flairs - at least using they reddit iPhone app. Do other apps support this? I miss all the features of Usenet newsreaders back from the ancient days.

I'm pretty sure u can search posts by flair in reddit app. If not you can use other reddit clients. I use boost and infinity on Android. Not sure if it is available for iPhone. idk if the kind of flairs you ask for , already exists and the post are tagged by flair properly. I was just suggesting the use of flairs by you or the moderators of the subreddit would bring the solution for the problem you stated.

I don't think so. I'm just using it right now in a browser on a computer. From what I can see, Flairs are useless crap. Here are all the choices I'm given for them in this group: Select r/emacs flairemacs-fuQuestionNewsSolved Who set these up? Only moderators? Why is this so pathetically useless compared to Usenet readers from 30 years ago? Backward evolution? It's so frustrating that every couple of years, some company comes out with a new discussion platform that ignores decades of history and experience and starts all over again from square one. I hope I'm wrong about this and someone can show me how to have the equivalent of Kill Files and other features of newsreaders like gnus (inside emacs), rn, Forte Agent, Thunderbird, and tin? Just take a look here: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_Usenet\_newsreaders](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Usenet_newsreaders)Usenet still exists but it's mostly for posting (mostly illegal) binaries of music, movies, and apps. But text groups are still around - although barely used. They're just not the in and cool thing and there were technical issues. And financial issues; no single entity ran it - totally distributed. No way to make a fortune with advertising and who wants an app like that :( And, something most people have no clue about - Google started mostly as a Usenet archive company!!!! It was originally called Deja News. Then [Deja.com](https://Deja.com). Google bought them in 2001 and it was great but it then started morphing into the Google we now know. There is still Google Groups which includes most, old Usenet groups. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google\_Groups
