Using async in org-babel results in some functions and variables being undefined

I am trying a long process org-babel process using `:async` in `org-babel` and the errors `(void-function function-name)` and `(void-variable variable-name)` keep coming up even if they are defined. I take it that `:async` process probably runs another emacs process or session where those variables and functions may not be defined. How do I fix this?
