I follow Xah, but I am not in the mood of learning new keybindings. I must admit that I bought the keyboard he recommended and, after some adaption, my typing is faster.

After using Evil and Spacemacs I am lazy to even use shift for uppercase letters - I am in a state when I am actively try to remap even those Spacemacs keybindings that use uppercase letters to keybindings that are perhaps longer but don't include using shift fr uppercasing ;D. Perhaps I should switch to Chinese, I don't think they use shift as much - they don't have uppercase letters. ni in wo ai ni or ni ai wo will be always the same, specifically, 你. in English you have to type you or You.

So far it doesn't correspond at all ;). Can you see the results after voting as a non-author of the poll?

I like evil but using it is like fighting with emacs itself, so I just use emacs default binding now. I'm using an ergo keyboard now so it's very easy to use default key bindings.
flexibeast · 2022-08-03 07:37
Not voting, because my answer is 'sometimes': i don't enable Evil by default, but regularly make use of `evil-local-mode`. i'm not a fan of being forced to use the same approach to editing regardless of context (like, i'm not only using Emacs for programming ...), so appreciate being able to choose what's best on a case-by-case basis.
LorenzoFero · 2022-08-03 08:28
I'm trying to use Evil... I need some time to get used to it though
nagora · 2022-08-03 08:53
Absolutely not. Hell is modal keybindings.
SlowValue · 2022-08-03 08:59
Evil users are in one aspect like Vegans, CrossFitters or Arch users, they always feel the urge to mention that they are using/doing it. Other users just don't care to mention it. Do you expect, by a mere Reddit poll, which is running for a day or two, to get significant statistical data about all Emacs users?
LordOfSwines · 2022-08-03 09:12
A combination of x11 sticky modifiers and repeat-keymaps with “default” keybinds is what I use. Oh and kinesis adv 2
Sebraaapstian · 2022-08-03 10:13
I'm using God-mode to reduce the wrist strain from repeated CTRL pressing. Which I guess is modal?
East_Staff3288 · 2022-08-03 10:34
Why do you attack me? What did I do to you? I am just saying what I see. Do you see it? I am being serious, because I know that some polls you can't see the results until it's over, but I, as the poll creator, see the results. So, please, report to me whether you see the results or not. And again, please, stop attacking people who use alternative keybindings. Thank you.
East_Staff3288 · 2022-08-03 10:36
For everybody, can you see the results after voting?
by_wicker · 2022-08-03 11:02
Can you point out where they attacked you? I read the comment twice and can't see it.
aaronemassey · 2022-08-03 11:19
I use Evil btw. Lol. But really I use such a mix that I don't even know where one begins and the other ends. I am a big fan of modal editing though. But now both default emacs and evil key bindings have blended so much I'm cursed/blessed to stay within emacs as I can't just "use a vim key bindings plugin" on some other editor.
mattplm · 2022-08-03 12:23
Nobody attacked you, nobody attacked anybody for using alternative keys and yes we can see the results. The point of the above comment was that the poll will ultimately be biaised and you can't just say "it doesn't correspond" from the small sample you have here. Yes the results are different, but this is expected for the reasons stated by their comment (also, just in case, nobody said that emacssurvey 2020 isn't biaised, but the sample size is more significant)
East_Staff3288 · 2022-08-03 13:08
For the third time, do you see the results after voting? Again, a serious question. I assume yes, but please, please, please... confirm or deny. Thank you.
East_Staff3288 · 2022-08-03 13:09
I am a vegan and am a vegan because of autoimmune disease and stuff. So, it's pretty sad to hear people attack you like that ;(.

I actually haven’t used eMacs full time yet, still use vim/vi. But I plan on using viper mode just get vi. I don’t need everything to be vim like, which is the goal of evil to my understanding. I just need the basics to navigate around. I think using viper mode is nice if you actually like eMacs bindings, which I do. I just think for pure text navigation and editing you can’t beat modular key bindings. But for switching buffers and saving files and crap like, you don’t need him bindings or whatever. Emacs bindings are fine. It’s the pure editing that I want vi for.

Back when I used (tried to, anyway) Emacs for email, I vaguely remember being able to list specific modes that would default to different Evil "states". I set whatever mu4e edit mode to use "Emacs state" by default, since composing a (plain text) email really doesn't need to be modal. It's pretty convenient to be able to do that.

Yes
East_Staff3288 · 2022-08-03 15:12
Ok, thanks.

I answered "yes" but the actual answer is "sorta". I use `god-mode` with numerous custom functions to enhance my god-mode experience. I call it "pseudo-modal". I like that it doesn't confuse me and I don't have to brain out of `hjkl` and back in again.

Nah. I tried Evil for a long time. Then also Meow. More recently, I tried Xah-fly-keys, and also a home-grown modal editing setup. All of them were great, but no matter what I do I can't get used to switching between modes. It causes me to go into a rage when I start typing but forget that I'm still in command mode, and unpredictable things happen. Text disappears, cursor flies off into the wind... So I stick with Emacs bindings, but I use kmonad to move the Ctrl key to another location. I think Ctrl in the corner will give anyone RSI unless they can slow down and avoid twisting their wrist and using their pinky to reach it... But I like to type fast, so I gotta make adjustments. I'm also using the Dvorak layout. For that reason I recently started swapping "C-t" with "C-x" and adjusting a few related bindings for consistency. It's an improvement, though not really necessary.
