I find the experience quite difficult under evil-mode.
The key bindings in the evil-collection for gnus aren't intuitive to me and I'm wondering if there's a better way. For example, I usually just use the hjkl keys to move around and prefer to use the emacs bindings in Normal mode to do the rest (catchup, move topics, etc.).

I don't use evil in gnus, but use hydra a lot.

I find the experience hard even without evil [1]. My suggestion would be to make judicious use of the menu bar, especially with LaCarte installed.

Very good idea!
Since `transient` is now part of Emacs 28, I might give it a spin to see how it can help lessen the pain. :)
