Learning Emacs for note-taking.

inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 10:40
I started learning Emacs for my daily note-taking purpose and will extend beyond note-taking eventually. I felt the power of Emacs despite being a newbie. I also want to use Emacs on Android and ios too. Which app do you recommend for using Emacs on Android or ios?

Closest is either ish.app or termux?

https://organice.200ok.ch for note taking on iOS | Android.

Will I be able to just read or be able to edit org documents too?
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 12:16
Thanks, I will try this.

On Android you can use Termux. You can install a full emacs on that, with all bells and whistles. Syncing notes can be done using rsync or similar, depending on what you are comfortable with.

Wow. Thanks for letting me know.

I have a good system going with Orgzly and syncthing on the phone. Its not actual emacs on the phone though, if thats what you want.

I built https://plainorg.com for iOS.

Thanks, phone will be my secondary or you can say mostly read only and very rarely for writing.
Conscious_Advance_18 · 2022-08-02 16:03
This works pretty good and can be self hosted
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 17:38
Thank you
CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-08-02 19:00
This is exactly what I use and it's really good.
CannibalismIsNatural · 2022-08-02 19:02
Orgzly + Syncthing is a great combination. You can even schedule ToDos and the Syncthing widget on your phone will give notifications at the scheduled time.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 19:12
I am getting most recommendation for Orgzly. Thanks.

[This](https://www.reddit.com/r/joplinapp/comments/m2f86z/how_i_use_joplin_and_syncthing_to_keep_my_notes/) is a guide I wrote up for using Syncthing with Joplin, another notetaking app, but it should translate pretty easily.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 19:48
Thank you for the contribution.

logseq can read org files: [https://coredumped.dev/2021/05/26/taking-org-roam-everywhere-with-logseq/](https://coredumped.dev/2021/05/26/taking-org-roam-everywhere-with-logseq/) termux has an emacs-x11 package, that can be run with a vnc client for GUI
NotAFedoraUser · 2022-08-02 20:39
ish.app is an app that emulates part of linux, and had a lot of Alpine Linux packages available, which includes emacs. I haven’t used Android for a while but I believe termux is similar in scope and function. Hope it helps
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 21:11
That is pretty interesting. This is completely new to me.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 21:13
Thanks, I will also try ish.
NotAFedoraUser · 2022-08-02 21:54
Fair warning, _can_ be a bit slow, due to emulation, but other than this it should work pretty well
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 21:56
Thanks for the warning, I will look into it.
NotAFedoraUser · 2022-08-02 21:57
Enjoy nonetheless, Emacs is a great drug/text editor
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 22:19
The more I am learning, the more I am feeling it...
NotAFedoraUser · 2022-08-02 22:23
Yeee, for me it’s the absolute freedom to just fiddle around that got me hooked, and of course, org-mode is just too fucking good 👍
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-02 22:32
It took me a while to understand its value. I explored almost every open-source note-taking app available and experienced a lot of limitation. So, I decided to take a look at Emacs as it was recommended in many places and found the gem I never even thought of from such an ancient thing. It almost passed 52 years if I am not wrong.
seidenkaufman · 2022-08-03 05:38
For Android, I use Emacs on it with Termux
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-03 09:31
How is the performance on phone?
seidenkaufman · 2022-08-04 15:56
Generally quite good, especially with a small bluetooth keyboard or an app like Hacker's Keyboard which contains Ctrl, Alt keys, etc. The only issue one runs into is that certain keybindings that work with the GUI version of Emacs do not operate in the terminal version, so I've had to write secondary bindings for those (rare) situations. In general however, I've found it very convenient to take notes this way. I also have git on Termux, so I can push new notes to a repository and pull them onto my computer when I'm using the notes later down the road.
inquisitive-user_ · 2022-08-04 19:24
Wow! Good job.
