Emacs - workflow with iPad

zallthetime · 2022-07-31 11:07
I am using emacs for the past 3 years and I have developed my ecosystem around emacs. I like to read a lot of articles and research papers and I have been setting up org roam for the same purpose. I have purchased an iPad recently to increase my productivity(watching lectures on youtube and reading some articles in my free time or while I am traveling). Do you guys have any suggestions on using org roam with iPad for notetaking? I could not find anything on the internet apart from an indirect integration via logseq. I am sure some of you would have faced similar issues. Any suggestion is appreciated.

I’m interested in as well. I got my iPad mini and started reading a lot on it using books app, had to transfer notes time to time.

You can try using Blink shell. That way you can ssh into your computer and run emacs from there. Of course, the main disadvantage would be running emacs inside a terminal.

I think this is probably the best way. I spent a few years running emacs in a terminal on a MacBook and it wasn't so bad. I've never used any of the emulators for iOS though...they may make certain things more annoying.

This youtuber has a mobile iPad development workflow, not necessarily a note taking workflow. But he walks you through it and gives tips on the experience. Which can be helpful and I think he explains everything quite well. https://youtu.be/B-1wGwvUwm8

i have a linode instance I ssh into from ipad/phone to edit/view my org files. I also built a simple web front end to show me an agenda based on my org files

My workflow is not very polished yet but so far I would recommend beOrg for org mode note taking and iSH to run a command line local emacs

I see. Thanks.
zallthetime · 2022-07-31 14:46
Thanks
zallthetime · 2022-07-31 14:47
That's neat. Do you have a public repo? Can give it a star. :)
mobiledevguy5554 · 2022-07-31 14:50
I don't but I really should!
tacosandlinux · 2022-07-31 14:54
So another post I saw a while back basically shows how to do export your agenda to HTML files. https://blog.lambda.cx/posts/org-agenda-new-tab/

Thanks a ton.

No probs, also iSH gives you a mostly complete Linux terminal so you can use tmux, ssh, etc. For git if you don’t mind paying I recommend working copy too.
sober_programmer · 2022-07-31 15:19
Is the terminal version the same as GUI one when it comes to features in this respect? How would one run it in a terminal on an iPad?
internallogictv · 2022-07-31 15:48
Yes they are the same for the most part because the emacs GUI doesn't do much other than display the same interface the terminal does. I'm not sure how it would work on an iPad. I think probably you would SSH into a machine or VM that had a full Unix-y environment with emacs installed on it
mobiledevguy5554 · 2022-07-31 15:58
nice!
sober_programmer · 2022-07-31 15:59
Thanks! I thought you were able to get it working on an iPad.
internallogictv · 2022-07-31 20:10
You might be able to get it working on iPad, but I'm not sure you want to. You would be fighting uphill. E.g. emacs doesn't natively speak the iOS APIs so a lot of stuff would be broken or only half work.
xenodium · 2022-07-31 20:13
I built [https://plainorg.com](https://plainorg.com) (r/plainorg) for iOS. While it is optimised for iPhone, it should give basics (viewing and editing) on iPad.
talentedcoin · 2022-08-01 01:15
Yup, best way to improve your productively is to ditch the iPad 😂 I tried to make this work and couldn’t.

I, actually, have been thinking about that for a while now and yesterday (a bit inspired by your post) decided to finally go for it. My original idea was to just run Linux in cloud and connect to it via ssh and use emacs, tmux, REPLs, docker and so on. One thing that was stopping me before is pricing. AWS EC2 seemed pretty expensive. Especially if you run it all the time. I found a service called Ionos (i hope it doesnt count as advertisement) which has a £1/month VPS. After I registered and the VPS was up and running (ubuntu 20.04), I did this: * Setup a new user (so i dont use root) * Add a subdomain (just an A record pointing to the IP address) for convenience. Now I could even add a webserver to the VPS. * install git, generate a public key and get access to github * Cloned my repo with my configs (if you dont have one, I can't recommend it enough) * Install fish (I switched a couple of years ago and loving it) * install emacs + some basic packages (darktooth theme, helm, magit) * install tmux On my ipad (i'm also using that magic case so it's already like a laptop with a physical keyboard) i tried installing Blink Shell and Termius. Blink shell seemed cool (as in, just looked funky) but the free version isn't great and i didnt wanna pay for an ssh client (sounds silly) so I'm going with Termius. Don't forget to make you "option" button behave like meta (alt). Both clients have a setting for that Some other steps I wanna do is I wanna disable ssh password login but I have some concerns about it I'm too lazy to address atm. Disclaimer: I'm by no means is a system administrator or a knowledgable linux user. There're probably other things needing setup

Thanks for the descriptive answer.
