How do you like the PinePhone?

How's the typing?

Looks amazing. I am thinking about buying a Pine Phone Pro myself. Not for the heavy coding stuff but for everyday use and remote sessions. I also like the setup you are using for the markdown editing. Is it just plain markdown mode or some extra config and/or packages? Those equations are looking really nice.

Do u use a Bluetooth keyboard or what
agisga · 2022-07-29 17:14
I use markdown mode and some custom functions for writing, and deft for navigating my notes. But deft is unbearably slow on the PinePhone (at least with my config). So, I think I'll switch to Org-Roam which seems to perform well on PinePhone. I posted a short video demo here: https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/wba7bz/notetaking_with_orgroam_on_pinephone_emacs_281_gui/ However, I just set up all of this yesterday, and still need to see how usable it actually is..

For the picture I just folded the on-screen keyboard. Sometimes I also use an external keyboard over usb like shown here (I haven't gotten Bluetooth to work yet on postmarketOS SXMO): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D89GjOWYyxY

It's a fun device to try but I have not really found a use for it yet. Maybe note-taking will be it.

Question: Ive heard some things are not very stable on it. Are basic calling and texting functions working okay, in case I want to try using it as a daily driver when I get it?

Do gestures work with what looks like i3? How do you switch and move windows?
agisga · 2022-07-29 20:37
It's called SXMO. It's built on top of the Sway window manager if I'm not mistaken. There are various gesture controls and the volume+power buttons are used to control the user interface too: https://man.sr.ht/~anjan/sxmo-docs/USERGUIDE.md#strongglobal-ui-controlsstrong (The on screen keyboard also has all the modifier keys to use standard i3-like keybindings.)

I wish it were a video demo, curious.

I don't use it for calls or text, so, can't answer, sorry. I got this phone from a colleague who almost 2 years ago tried to daily drive it but got really frustrated with sluggish performance and poor battery life. However, I think the software has improved considerably since then. Personally I use only Firefox, Emacs, terminal applications, and (very occasionally) the camera on the PinePhone.
