Help windows normally close on pressing the `q` key, but my [helpful](https://github.com/Wilfred/helpful) windows open in evil-mode and that appears to change the behaviour of the `q` key.
Looking at the keymap for `helpful-mode` key `113` is mapped to `quit-window` and it turns out to be the `q` key.
So it will be better to check if the helpful windows switch to normal mode and then remap the `q` key to evil-quit.

Have you checked the `evil-collection` [package](https://github.com/emacs-evil/evil-collection)?
The following configuration works for me (assuming you use `use-package`):
(use-package evil-collection
:ensure t
:after evil
:config
(setq evil-collection-mode-list '(helpful)) ; Modes to activate Evil keybindings for
(evil-collection-init))
You might want to take a look at other modes includes in `evil-collection`.

Can the `helpful-mode-hook` be tested for `evil-mode` and the key added?

As the other commenter said, install evil-collection. It will set this up for you. You will not have to worry about q not closing the helpful window. It just does it. Evil-collection is a package that maps all the keys like this to be as intuitive as possible with evil-mode. You will have a better time than trying to set this up manually.
