How to organize bookmarks using emacs?

eis3nheim · 2022-07-17 21:46
I want a way that I could organize my bookmarks and be able to tag it and give a small description if needs. Such that the capturing is done from the browser. Is there any package(s) that could achieve that?

Based on your post headline, i was going to suggest my [Ebuku](https://github.com/flexibeast/ebuku) package, an Emacs frontend to the [buku](https://github.com/jarun/Buku) Web bookmark manager - i use it myself, and it has support for both tags and comments on links. But it doesn't meet your requirement of capturing from the browser; i copy-and-paste the URL from the browser into an Emacs prompt.

I described my simple method on [UOMF: Managing web bookmarks with Org Mode](https://karl-voit.at/2014/08/10/bookmarks-with-orgmode/) which you could extend by [org-protocol](https://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/org-protocol.html) which I never cared of so far.

I would do create org file. Using org-protocol and a template to append to this file. It would be simple, but effective. I have a org file as my main dashboard with several bookmarks.

I use linkmarks exactly for that: https://github.com/dustinlacewell/linkmarks As others said, it works beautifully with org-protocolo and org-capture from the browser. HTH. :)

I use [grasp](https://github.com/karlicoss/grasp) to capture links from the browser. It also captures any text you have selected on the page and you can add tags and a description.

[BrainTool](https://braintool.org) is a bookmarker and tabs manager browser extension that saves your data in org-mode format optionally synced to an emacs-editable local file. Its designed for exactly this use case. Saved pages are organized into a 'topic' hierarchy and can have attached notes. Full search and keyboard navigation in the browser.

I have an undocumented, works-on-my-system, untested prototype of a tabfs-like chrome extension that starts a python server providing a socket api that is then called by an equally production-ready piece of elisp. Everything still has hardcoded paths, etc. It syncs all your tabs and bookmarks into a [browser.org](https://browser.org) inbox file, supports updating titles and operations on each item (kill/change-type), supports going through your `org-agenda-files` and syncing items there. No-one uses the built-in bookmark.el?
