Retro Emacs 28.1 (via cool-retro-term)

Now I have the urge to purchase an old CRT monitor and hook it up to my USB hub or HDMI if that's even possible.
anaumann · 2022-07-17 10:34
Just install cool-retro-term, it's a good enough substitute and it lets you tweak a number of parameters to give you all kinds of defective terminals :D
Ghosty141 · 2022-07-17 11:09
I did that haha. A few things, first: most only have composite video so youd need a concerter or hook it up to a raspi for example which has native composite out. Secondly, most amber crts are quite small, mine is 12‘
Oh and now comes the dealbreaker for actual usage: the goddamn crt noise. We are so used to everything being quiet that we tend to forget how old monitors for example used to sound. If you are old enough or dont hear high pitched sounds then its fine but s lot of people do :D
Edit: Here is a picture of it showing htop

Hm? I don't remember such noise from when I had a CRT. I remember one could hold the arm in front of the screen and it would make ones hairs rise though and how it "flashed" when pressing the power button.

My dream is to run emacs on the pipboy
zelphirkaltstahl · 2022-07-17 12:16
Huh, good to know. Either my ears were never able to percieve it (I was 5-10 years old), or my CRT was of different kind.
dustycanuck · 2022-07-17 13:27
Orange text for the win!
Ghosty141 · 2022-07-17 13:35
It depends on the size. At 12 inches it gets more audbile than if you have a CRT TV or big monitor.

What we would have given for those terminals to have that many rows and columns. Go full retro, pull it up `--geometry 80x24`.
olivuser · 2022-07-17 14:13
Getting some real Jupiter Hell vibes :D
lambda_abstraction · 2022-07-17 14:35
Sadly, real vt-220s (where I first ran emacs when I wasn't plopped down in front of a Sun 3/60) seem more expensive than they should be.
bigfig · 2022-07-17 15:22
I bet as components age, capacitors leak, wires and connectors loosen resulting in more noise.
godofbiscuitssf · 2022-07-17 16:04
Except for the “apple” text in there, kinda reminds me of “MINCE” back in my CMU days in the 80s.
madwilliamflint · 2022-07-17 16:22
Oh I need that.
madwilliamflint · 2022-07-17 16:23
> the goddamn crt noise.
God I'd forgotten about that whine.
madwilliamflint · 2022-07-17 16:24
heh. Problem would be the keyboard interface. You'd have to have something pretty goofy to get it to work right. NOT that it's impossible, to be sure.
carnivorousdrew · 2022-07-17 16:25
As if the pipboy isn't goofy already :P I'd add a sliding mini keyboard like those old nokia phones from mid 2000s
FOSSbflakes · 2022-07-17 18:49
This tutorial will get you 80% of the way there: https://www.instructables.com/Pipboy-Built-From-Scrap/
Getting emacs terminal in the "Data" tab seems appropriate.
Comfortable keyboard input is an uphill battle, but perhaps building dedicated ctrl/meta switches onto the pipboy could help as well.

I had not; it was the bane of my profession for such a long time. I was sometimes the only person in a room who could hear it, and someone somewhere in the open-plan office would turn on a dodgy monitor, and then I couldn't do any work due to a device half way across the floor screaming in my head.
*Eventually*, after a long time, I stopped being able to hear them (not just because they became uncommon; on a couple of relatively-recent occasions someone else mentioned hearing one when I could not). Gone, but not forgotten.
DrPiwi · 2022-07-17 22:27
A vt220 and most later models could do next to the 80x24 also a 132x24 mode. That would give you longer lines to work with, but not more lines.
More recent terminals may also do 50 or 48 lines by 132 characters.
hvis · 2022-07-18 00:32
I want that in GUI Emacs.
There was some work implementing text-shadow in https://github.com/ksqsf/emacsmoe/pull/1 which can be used to create a neon effect like this.
It's been stuck on macOS-only so far, and I'm not even sure how well that works.
maximizeWHEEEEEEE · 2022-07-18 04:45
Thought this was a pip boy for a moment.
zixx999 · 2022-07-18 14:24
"Who the hell brings a chainsaw to space?!" I love that game
ivano_GiovSiciliano · 2022-09-11 09:31
the only issue is that running emacs -nw so to use it from cool-retro terminal does not recognise meta on macos (where is named \`Option\`) because is used to generate special characters
