Is there an Emacs Discord server?
ares623 · 2022-07-17 08:24
I know there’s \#emacs on IRC, but I personally prefer Discord nowadays. I know it’s counter to what Emacs stands for, but yet here we are on Reddit and Youtube so there is room for compromise, at least for some users.

There is a discord for Emacs Doom. And another one from SystemCrafters. I think that should be enough info for you to google it, I'm on mobile right now.
The Doom one also has a #help-non-doom and #elisp channel, which are quite general (not Doom Specific).
SystemCrafters also does non Emacs things (e.g. making installing software much more complex than ever with Guix), but it is mainly Emacs related.

Sweet. SystemCrafters looks like what I'm looking for. Thanks!

Does Discord provide a publicly viewable log of the discussions?
ares623 · 2022-07-17 09:17
No, as far as I'm aware.

I suspected?
What is the use of discussion systems where the knowledge shared isn't made available to the general public?
It may be fashionable but it doesn't make sense. Do people get a warm cosy feeling from being part of a private group where none of the info shared gets out to the public?
Reminds of those Slack free tier where only the last 10,000 messages are retained.

Totally agree with you, and in an ideal world these platforms would allow public access to logs.
But I don't have the time nor the motivation anymore to manage an IRC bouncer to keep track of missed messages, so here I am.

There is a matrix room for emacs and another for org-mode.
Ok mobile now, sorry about the missing links.

The use is to consume and contribute within a community, it's not private in that everyone can join

The point is to make the information shared available to the public via search engines and other users who might want to reference the info later.
I'm surprised at the number of times I have asked a question on some topic or done a search on it only to find that I asked the same question a few years ago, got an answer, applied it and forgot about only for it to come up again.
It just make sense. What if a user needs some information they shared and don't have access to their discord account for some reason?

Both mediums are not mutually exclusive, and if it's not as flexible as Google's Discord does have search capabilities
But I do know what you mean, it's just that IM communities aren't really build with that mind and I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily. Other than cost I don't know what prevents them (Discord in this case) to publish daily logs or similar; is it how Gitter does it?

Every Discord server I've been on has this. I don't know if it's an optional setting or if it's true of all of them.
IRC doesn't have it unless you set up a bot to listen all the time. (Or maybe it's built in on some servers now, not sure.)
But I still wish IRC had kept up its popularity. The idea that we have a single company running the servers for most group chats requiring proprietary software is very far from ideal.
If we made a list of things that require private investment and ownership to create an online experience, "chat rooms" shouldn't even be in driving distance.

Here's a Discord mostly for Common Lispers, but the rooms about emacs-lisp and other lisps are active: https://discord.gg/gRGQdxK8
