I want to type in the commands or evaluate some of the code in the manual as I read it. Online it says to use C-x * i to read the manual, but it does not work. Is there a way to download the manual into emacs?

`C-x * i` should work by default.
What OS are you using and how did you install Emacs?
As last resort you could look at this: [https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/InfoPath](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/InfoPath).

Have you installed Emacs via the package manager of a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution?
If so, make sure you install the documentation. The emacs package alone is *not* a complete installation of Emacs (IIRC it's missing the elisp source files and also the documentation).

Im on debian 11 and I used sudo apt install emacs. That could be the reason why. Why doesnt debian package the documentation all together?

Im on debian 11 and used apt. Its weird because I can browse the elisp code for org mode. In other distros which manuals come included by default?

calc manual comes with [package `emacs-common-non-dfsg`](https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/emacs-common-non-dfsg).
Manuals are packaged separately due to different licenses.

Debian has some disagreement with the documentation license the FSF uses for Emacs, for reasons that 99% of users do not actually care about, but it means they put the docs in a different distribution track that users have to explicitly install.

It sounds like you do have Debian's elisp source package installed then, but documentation is a different package again (per my link).
I *assume* that OS packages either supply no info manuals or all info manuals. Supplying *some* of them but not others would make no sense to me. I don't really know though; I build Emacs myself.

I have installed the non dfsg package. I had to run
export INFOPATH=$INFOPATH:/usr/share/info/emacs
For C-x * i to show the calc manual. Is there a way to see which other manuals got installed? When I type C-h i I get the same index of manuals I had before installing non dfsg

Every info file which was installed through Debian packages, should have a link in directory `/usr/share/info/` and (*important*) every info file should have its own entry in a file called `/usr/share/info/dir`
When you install a Debian package, the `dir` file will be automatic modified accordingly. There should be no need to set environment variable `INFOPATH` (after installing a Debian package).
There are other standard locations for info files like `/usr/local/share/info/` and all have *one* `dir` file. The contents of those `dir` files are important.
