The Secrets of My Emacs Presentation Style

Hey folks!
In this video, I'll show you how I've configured a package called 'org-present' to achieve the presentation style you see in many of my videos! We'll cover face customization, Org mode visual settings, and write a few hook functions for setting everything up the way we want.
Show notes are here: https://systemcrafters.net/emacs-tips/presentations-with-org-present/

Just wanted to say you make great content. Always catch your videos.

Thanks a lot!

Same here. I enjoyed very much your video about herbstluftwm.
I had two questions about it:
1. Are you going to stream again about the herbstluftwm integration?
2. If you control herbstluftwm from emacs how do you plan to solve the issue of emacs freezing while waiting for a task to finish? Perhaps a separated set of keybindings that are not dependent on emacs?
Here is the video for those who have not seen it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMcpd9ixPOU

Thanks, glad you liked it!
If people are interested in seeing more about it I'd certainly be willing to go further with it.
Using Herbstluft actually avoids the Emacs hanging issues entirely because Emacs isn't constantly involved in controlling it. The code I wrote was purely for calling into Herbstluft's command interface to tell it to do things at the moment I needed it. Works pretty well!

I mean, isn't this a LOT of work vs. just using preso software?
daviwil · 2022-06-28 18:19
"Sir, this is an r/Emacs" :)
All joking aside, if someone wants to give a presentation with presentation software, they should do that. I like giving presentations directly from Emacs because it lets me work in a comfortable environment and also evaluate code snippets, run Emacs commands, etc.
For making videos or giving talks about Emacs, it makes a lot of sense. For making sales projection decks to present to your CFO, not so much.

Not for me. I use org-present to give lectures on comp sci every week at university and (since students want something to download) pandoc to build beamer slides. The slides include code snippets, non-ascii characters. Pasting code etc out of Emacs into something else, fixing the formatting, syntax highlighting etc etc would be more work.

I use org-re-reveal for my presentations but I'll give this a try, it looks like it has lower friction.
Thanks !
ubermonkey · 2022-06-28 19:54
Fair.

>"Sir, this is an r/Emacs" :)
Point taken.
I do a LOT of presenting, and I live in OrgMode, but I can't imagine trying to do this in part because Powerpoint is pretty good at what it does, and in part because I collaborate with non-Emacs people in creating those decks.
I'm thinking about using emacs now as a general editor, though. Do you know which mode does that? ;)

/u/ParticularAtmosphere . I'm in the same boat as you. please report back your findings :)
AblatedSprocket · 2022-06-29 02:44
Thanks for the content! Mind sharing what made you switch from org-tree-slide?
mclearc · 2022-06-29 03:14
Yeah I second this. Org latex classes are pretty easy to write. See [here](https://github.com/mclearc/org-latex-classes) for example (and [this blog post](https://www.colinmclear.net/posts/teaching-notes/).
sreekumar_r · 2022-06-29 04:55
Is it possible to add default headers and footers (like company name, logo, author, etc.) in org-present mode?
FOSSbflakes · 2022-06-29 06:00
Not when you just drop someone else's config into init. 😎
But in all seriousness, I agree when it comes to the reveal.js stuff. After setup this looks like you can more or less outline the presentation and present immediately.
FOSSbflakes · 2022-06-29 06:07
This is great, didn't know about this package. Last extra customization I'm adding is to automatically display and down-scaled inline images

maybe it’s just because i never really learned to love something like powerpoint but i really hate presentation software. i much prefer presentations-as-code, though only recently have i started using org mode for this. verdict was generally good over using plain markdown but either is vastly preferable for me to something like powerpoint.
