Getting this strange behavior. Only happens in org mode title. Chinese characters in the body of a buffer are fine. English in the title is fine. I've tried a couple of different fonts and the problem persisted. Not sure what else to try.

Try running emacs with `-Q` option? It loads emacs with no customisation. See if the problem persist.

What properties does the face have? If you run `describe-face` with the point in the title, the org title face should be the first option.

Is it just for the org mode title or does it show up when you propertize the same text to have a larger font size? Something like (insert (propertize "<the same text>" 'font-lock-face '(:height 1.2))) should do the job.

Have you tried setting a font with explicit CJK support like [Sarasa Gothic](https://github.com/be5invis/Sarasa-Gothic)? I assume that if it’s using a font fallback, the letter spacing difference between the first font and the fallback might cause this to happen.
It’s more visible the bigger the font gets, therefore you might not notice an issue with smaller sizes.

I'm not using too much Chinese these days.
But you can try https://github.com/tumashu/cnfonts to set up Chinese in Emacs
On Linux, many people also use the fonts WenQuanYi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WenQuanYi)

I set my Chinese font to use Sarasa Gothic and it fixed it. Thanks!
