appreciation post: doom

azfrak · 2022-06-20 10:28
Just did a quick look and found 98 commits to doom in the last week and a total of more than 17k commits. Maintaining such a huge code-base to share with everyone that is updated so frequently is no small feat, so just wanted to do a quick shout out to u/[hlissner](https://www.reddit.com/user/hlissner/) and everyone who contributes to doom and all the various distros out there (and everyone in this subreddit as well :) everyone is too kind and welcoming) As someone who spent an enormous amount of time botching together their own config with near nil elisp-fu, picking up doom recently has been such a wonderful experience. I get sane defaults, updates on new packages and ecosystems like vertico/marginalia/consult etc., and a nice way to keep it all up to date. Thank you u/[hlissner](https://www.reddit.com/user/hlissner/), and thank you to all who contribute. Your efforts are truly appreciated by so many. I just bought Henrik a couple coffees, and if you have the means and have enjoyed using doom as much as I have maybe consider doing the same. And if you are newer to the emacs scene and your emacs-fu chops are as weak as mine, I highly recommend giving [doom](https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs) a go, and know that you can turn [vim/evil key bindings off](https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs/blob/master/docs/faq.org#is-doom-only-for-vimmers) and still get all the benefits of a community maintained repo of awesome packages if you want to (although I am now a converted evil boi) :)

Agreed. Fellow doom user here. Absolutely loving it so far. Also thanks to those in the discord who have helped me on multiple occasions. Absolutely top quality community.

Absolutely agree! Doom is an incredible framework to build upon. One thing that I always assumed about Doom is that it was *really* focus on VIM, it's nice to see that vanilla Emacs bindings are also supported. I'm switching to vanilla myself and have started my own configuration, but I now realize that I can just use Doom without Evil and that's super nice.

I saw and tried that solution, the community is very active and polite, but it didn't meet my needs

Switched to doom emacs + native comp + pgtk after being a neovim user for over a year, with countless config files. I can replicate my workflow (and much much more) with a few lines of config), it's fast powerful, feature rich and it always surprises me. Thank you for all your efforts.
SorryTheory · 2022-06-20 18:02
Definitely echo a lot of the sentiment here. As a formerly very serious neovim user, Doom was my on-ramp to Emacs and it's hard to imagine I'd still be using Emacs had I not had Doom to ease me into it. I really can't express my appreciation enough for Doom and its community.

I never used Doom, but I use Doom-modeline. Had a small suggestion and the day after u/hlissner implemented it. I really like doom-modeline. So thanks!

Honestly, doom is probably the best config/framework I’ve ever used - it got me into eMacs and by extension lisp
by_wicker · 2022-06-20 20:01
I wanted to use it, but immediately discovered it did things I didn't want and when I went to find the relevant config to alter the behavior, I found they've totally disabled the customize interface. So discoverability is removed, and AFAICT not replaced with anything. So... sadly, doom is not for me. It's a shame, I'd be very happy to take on a curated config, but it has to fit in with Emacs for me, not vice-versa.
NFVblog · 2022-06-20 20:53
same problem as me, they create something illegible at first glance, I need something extremely personalized and kidnapped to use because while I work I have to be fast
hagerty9009 · 2022-06-20 21:25
Doom was a great springboard to get me into Emacs. I've since moved on to doing my own thing, simply because I don't want to have the weight of Doom anymore. It was so much easier to work with compared to Spacemacs, and really made me realize how much this program is capable of.

I had a bug in doom last weekend, when a patch broke an installation and syncing latest changes. It was fixed within an hour, with a workaround available when reading comments on the Github issue in minutes. I'm a convert from custom config -> Spacemacs -> Doom and a happy Doom user for the last two years. I will not be going back.
desgreech · 2022-06-21 21:16
I don't use the customize interface, but I remember accidentally triggering it a few times while using Doom, are you sure it's actually disabled?
azfrak · 2022-06-22 00:24
Totally fair, Doom or any distro aren't perfect for everyone, and one day I might go back to rolling my own config, but regardless will be looking back to distros like doom as a valuable resource to see what is changing with the emacs world on a larger scale, and use some of the config info there as a valuable resource for helpful ways to set up certain packages and to get them to cooperate with each other.
NFVblog · 2022-06-22 07:08
True so much that I have saved Github too.
shaunsingh0207 · 2022-06-22 16:47
iirc doom disables it and recommends not to use it (in favor of using the `after!` to help override the settings for a package in your `config.el` file instead). However, you can choose to enable customize if you would like to.
xFallow · 2022-06-24 13:50
After trying to set up my own config from scratch (how hard could it be?) I now realise how much work doom was saving me. Will definitely be shouting a few coffees for hlissner
sagopi · 2022-07-01 11:41
yup thanks u/hlissner !!! Finally I too have a structured, stable emacs config which is also not stale!!!
