I am on Emacs 28.1 compiled with HarfBuzz/Cairo, still Emacs picks up the medium weight font when I specify the regular weight. It works fine in gnome-terminal and other applications.
Only way to get it select the regular weight font is to remove the medium weight font.
The font is [**M PLUS Code Latin 50**](https://github.com/coz-m/MPLUS_FONTS/tree/master/fonts/otf)

Emacs learned to distinguish between medium and regular only recently [1], I think you need to build from master.

Looks like I built tag emacs-28.1 and this patch isn't part of it. 😬
