Thinking about config changes I want to make in the middle of the workday like:

Yeah….we, um, wait until _after_ work to tweak those config files
CitrusLizard · 2022-06-10 21:19
Boss makes a dollar,
I make a dime,
That's why I elisp on company time.
sceadu · 2022-06-10 21:53
Accurate for me since I'm stuck using emacs in WSL at work

There's always that one guy that takes it a step further than you(me) do.
duckieWig · 2022-06-10 22:06
What's wrong with emacs in WSL? It works pretty well for me.
Llamanator3830 · 2022-06-10 22:11
Yeah but sometimes I want a good gui environment with emacs and Win10 WSL doesn't provide that.

Can relate. Also it's not fun to run Spacemacs or any Emacs distro which always checks for internet connection on startup.
You can build a custom distro with offline (frozen) packages tho.

Looks like the Emacser himself was transformed a bit in the move home.

https://github.com/Opticos/GWSL-Source
I use this and a tool for opening links in my windows browser. It works really well.
sceadu · 2022-06-10 23:05
for me the thing that is a constant annoyance is that it feels like there's always a slight input lag in WSL (mainly the GUI/display server)... (emacs specifically for this point but there's others that maybe aren't relevant to emacs)
Thwy__ · 2022-06-11 00:36
So true. In my college's PC I can only use the old emacs 24, almost no package is available for it. Everytime when I get home I feel so happy to launch emacs 28.
KaleidoscopeWarCrime · 2022-06-11 00:40
One million percent yes
guygastineau · 2022-06-11 00:58
You both made my day. I am so glad I get to manage my own work environment
cazzipropri · 2022-06-11 01:09
Yes! Because if I do it at work I can't commit it to my public repo!
jacobissimus · 2022-06-11 01:12
Lol my bosses would probably say the same thing
quantum_mattress · 2022-06-11 01:58
If it was a Windows PC, couldn’t you just install the most recent version? Did they have the PC locked down?
Thwy__ · 2022-06-11 02:01
It's an old Lubuntu and I need the sudo password to do anything
quantum_mattress · 2022-06-11 02:51
Got it. FYI, when I just had my group IT guy install 28.1 on my Centos system, he then had to also install a recent version of gcc since the one with the OS was too old. It still worked but took a long time to start up because of errors in the new Native Compile.

bugamn · 2022-06-11 03:52
If you have enough space, you could try to compile your own local copy of emacs and then put it in a local bin that you add to your PATH, although emacs can get quite large so you might not be able to do that.
centzon400 · 2022-06-11 05:27
Few things feel greater than coming home , getting into yer jim-jams and *finally* throwing off that work wig.
invsblduck · 2022-06-11 06:12
This is amazing.
And: People don't edit emacs configs in the middle of their work day?!
jigarthanda-paal · 2022-06-11 14:23
Virgin professional emacs user vs Chad hobbyist emacs user
jigarthanda-paal · 2022-06-11 14:24
I edit my config as I program.
I program at work.
Ergo
Bolyzaurio · 2022-06-11 16:17
I don't have admin privileges on my working station running W10(it seems like it's not common for people to have admin privileges at their workstations\[homeofice\]), I can't configure python properly since I got Anaconda for work stuff. I can't manage to run pyenv with pyright, it's sooo annoying, meanwhile, if I turn on my personal PC it's soo easy to edit and run stuff, I might get approved to get a VirtualBox but seems soo dumb to have to run Linux in a VB to be able to have an optimized workflow.
p4r24k · 2022-06-11 16:50
emacs is the worst thing that has happened to my adhd...
redback-spider · 2022-06-11 18:31
For me that don't work because I am not employed :D
Sadly there are to few elisp jobs around (that said I got paid for hacking elisp once :D)
