New package: Consult-notes
mclearc · 2022-06-08 04:48
Hi all,
I've created a package to search arbitrary sources (e.g. directories of files, or org-roam nodes) for notes and present them in a consult--multi interface. (Constructive) feedback is very welcome.

That looks really nice, thank you for sharing your work! Looking at the suggested config, I can't seem to understand the difference between `consult-notes-sources` and `consult-notes-sources-data-dirs` though.

`sources` are consult sources, see consult documentation for more.
`data-dirs` are a list of directories to look for notes in.

Aha! Gotcha. So if one does not use `embark` the `consult-notes-sources` variable need not be set? I am wondering: `org-roam` stores where the notes are located on the disk - so if one were to only use `consult-notes` with `org-roam`, is it possible to bypass setting the `data-dirs` as well? Although this will require an explicit acknowledgement that `org-roam` notes are to be used, it may reduce chances of errors in providing the right list of `data-dirs`.

I made a typo, embark should be consult.
This package uses consult, so you are using it :p
The sources include what _kinds_ of notes to add (eg nodes, refs, etc) and the `data-dirs` is where the notes come from

Ah, I think I got it. Thanks for the patient replies! :P
I try to keep my config as simple and elisp-noob-friendly as I can. So I was trying to understand the simplest way I can configure `consult-notes` for my distro ([shameless plug for emacs-groundup](https://gitlab.com/public-repositories/emacs-groundup)).

I tried to make this a bit clearer in the README but please do feel free to open an issue if you're having any trouble.

Nice to see someone expanding on my code in the wiki. I use it all the time, hopefully this package will make it more visible to others. Nice job.

Thanks for contributing the code on the wiki!

Have you considered adding org-ql support which includes semantic org searches including properties and clocked time.
More nebulous:
I see you use ripgrep if the user has it installed. I recall Daniel saying grep has an advantage over ripgrep for consult usage somewhere, do you know about that and did you consider only defaulting to grep or ag which i think preserved the advantage he mentioned (that I cannot recall).
Edit: Doh! Forgot appreciation 😃
This looks useful and I look forward to trying it. Great job pulling something out of the wiki into a probably widely useful package.

Great idea. I don't have much experience with org-ql but it does seem pretty cool/useful. I'll definitely look into this.

I'm not sure but refining the function so that the user can set which search function they want is probably a better way to go, so I'll fix that. Thanks.

Thank you! Glad to see people might find it useful.
