org-contacts help with groups defined by org-mode tags

I quite like `org-contacts` for use with `gnus`. One problem I always had was that to use the mail to groups functionality (where everyone with a particular tag, e.g. `:family:` in my [`contacts.org`](https://contacts.org) file would get added to an email "to" line) I had to disable `helm-mode` type "+fam" and <tab>, and then, if I remembered, re-enable `helm-mode`. I didn't have to do this a lot, but it was nice when I needed it. Now with the org-contacts from 6 June 2022 this no longer works. I get an error message because instead of a string of names and emails I am getting a function. For example, `#("Father <fatherMadeUpAddress@family.ca>, Mother <motherMadeUpAddress@family.ca" 0 9 (face org-level-1 fontified t) 31 48 (face org-level-1 fontified t))` The names and addresses are in there if I could just get them out of that function. I think there is a `message-tab-function` I could use. Any suggestions from people who have already solved this issue, or would like to give me suggestions for how I might try? If people want to lobby for alternatives to org-contacts I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

>I get an error message because instead of a string of names and emails I am getting a function. For example [...] Your example is [a special read syntax for a string with text properties](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Text-Props-and-Strings.html), not a function.
