He's not only the godfather of CNN's, he's considered one of the three godfathers of the entire field of deep learning. All of them received the Turing award for it. I don't think it's very surprising, when the older generation of coders began their careers, Emacs was much more popular. I assume he started many decades ago and continued to use it out of habit.

>Yann Le cun I bet that his Emacs configuration doesn't reflect this.

**G**enerally **N**ot **U**sed, **E**xcept by **M**iddle **A**ged **C**omputer **S**cientists. And all great things were made by middle aged computer scientists, probably using emacs

I must be a minority. I’m currently 28 and have been coding since I was 23 and have used emacs since the beginning.
FlatBoobsLover · 2022-06-05 21:53
I'm 18. So, no vi.
smaller_infinity · 2022-06-05 22:17
I'm 26, started coding when I was 12, and I've been using emacs since I was 19. But yeah, we're definitely the minority

where's his .emacs.d?

I'm 29, been using Emacs since high school... almost every other Emacs user I've worked with either used it about *as long as I've been alive* or picked it up recently directly thanks to my encouragement :P

Thank you!

I think that any sample is likely to be biased, because young people who use emacs seem generally less likely to switch to anything else, and eventually become middle aged. I've been using emacs since my early twenties, and no I'm not going to tell you how long ago that was!

I am 17, coding since 12/13, and I am playing around with emacs since 16 (still using vim for code but looking for options to switch)

Also the creator of python, guido van rossum, uses emacs, Linus Torvalds uses microEmacs, almost all of the old school uses it programmer over 50 who does not use Emacs or Vim does not give confidence

Middle aged computer scientist here (actually, software engineer): I have kids, and I am teaching them how to use Emacs. It will survive for at least one more generation.

My dad made me install emacs. I think emacs might be genetic...
ottersinabox · 2022-06-09 03:55
it is. i'm 29 and have been using emacs since i was 12 because my dad made me switch when he saw me on vim.
