It is hard to explain. So please see this screen record [Emacs 27.1 on Debian 11, daemon-mode, python-mode with eglot as lsp and a lot other stuff](https://i.redd.it/2gmucdflb6291.gif) Any idea what this could be? I wasn't able yet to break down this to a part of my \`init.el\`. This happens only in GUI mode but not in \`-nw\` mode.

Where did the line number come from? which command/mode? Also, do you have some text hidden by invisible properties in that buffer?
wWA5RnA4n2P3w2WvfHq · 2022-05-29 10:41
Line numbers are from `(global-display-line-numbers-mode)`. It was a python buffer. So there are no hidden things I guess. I am not able to surely reproduce the problem. It comes from time to time. I will take a closer look when it appears the next time.

What is the value of `display-line-numbers` variable? And which Emacs version is that?
wWA5RnA4n2P3w2WvfHq · 2022-05-29 18:05
The value is `t` in a python buffer. And the version is `GNU Emacs 27.1 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.24.24, cairo version 1.16.0) of 2021-03-28, modified by Debian`

Try Emacs 28.1, if you can: there was at least one issue with `display-line-number-mode` which was fixed there. Maybe it also fixes this one. If not, and if you ever find a reproducible recipe for this issue, please report it using `M-x report-emacs-bug`.

Seeing the same behavior in 28.1 on a Homebrew (MacOS) install using `line-numbers-mode` in python. Don't remember seeing it in sql-mode.
eli-zaretskii · 2022-05-30 18:22
If you really mean `line-numbers-mode`, it is a different problem. That mode is deprecated, so I doubt that will be ever fixed. If you meant `display-line-numbers-mode` instead, and you have a reproducible recipe for showing the problem starting from `emacs -Q`, please report that to the Emacs bug tracker with all the details.
mmaug · 2022-05-31 15:50
Yep I did mean `display-line-numbers-mode` but didn't have an Emacs handy 😒 I'll try to see if I can reproduce from `-Q`; I've seen it on a heavily customized MacOS version at work but will need to reproduce in a clean environment

Thanks for the feedback. I think it depends on origami mode (or maybe other folding modes too). When something is folded this happens. I am on a stable Debian system and won't install from 3rd sources. But i will keep this in mind and check in the future if this happens with 28.1, too or not.
