If so, how do you know which 29.x version you are compiling?

Emacs will tell you the version, but what do you mean by "which 29.x version"? There's currently only one 29.x version: 29.0.50, see `M-x emacs-version RET`.

Version is defined in [configure.ac](https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/tree/configure.ac#n26)
AC_INIT(GNU Emacs, 29.0.50, bug-gnu-emacs@gnu.org, , https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/)

Adding to Eli: XX.0.50 is the label used for “unreleased development expected to maybe become version XX, someday”. There aren’t names “versions” until release (or perhaps release candidates), which isn’t expected especially soon for Emacs 29.

There's `C-h v emacs-repository-version` however, which tells you which VCS revision you built from, which is the important information for anyone using an unstable version of Emacs.

Thanks.
There is `emacs-repository-branch` as well.

And this has reminded me that I need to update my build script to ensure those things are set correctly, cause it builds nightlies from tarballs downloaded from GitHub, so there’s no VCS info for it to pull from.
