Today I found out that if I initialize a repo with magit, the buffer says: "In the beginning there was darkness"

paadam94 · 2022-05-20 11:29
It made me smile
ValentinPearce · 2022-05-20 13:21
Yeah, I spotted that recently and really liked it !

I think I noticed a long time ago but it makes me smile every single time

It's a good placeholder for the first message

When I added this I wanted to add *something* if nothing at all would otherwise be displayed (so that users would realize that the repository is just very empty as supposed to magit having failed very early while displaying the status). I figured I would use something more interesting than "repository is empty". But there is a small bug. It is displayed also when something else has already appeared: In the beginning there was darkness Untracked files (1) light So far I have decided against fixing that because it's just a small defect and users genuinely like it anyway and if I fixed it, then potentially fewer people would get to see it. Or maybe this isn't a bug at all? Oh well, I should just worry less about little details. ;P Regardless, it always makes me smile when someone new discovers it and likes it enough to let others know about it.

Oh, that’s funny. I always just assumed it was meant to show when there’s no commits in the current tree, regardless of untracked/staged files. I’m not on a computer to double check, so I could be wrong. But I think it shows if you create a new detached branch with no history in an existing repo.

I have committed that message three times now, thanks to magit
LinuxTenderFoot · 2022-05-21 02:04
I hope it's true, it gives me something to look forward to.

Thanks for creating the greatest git tool ever. I tell people it is alone a good enough reason to use emacs. “Maintaining” I suppose I should say.

Oh hey it's the dude. Magit is amazing, thank you so much!

In the beginning, this repository was void. Then /u/holgerschurig made a commit, and the chaos started to reign. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tohu_wa-bohu
