Can you create GUI interfaces and tables like these?

better-vessel · 2022-05-18 10:57
These screen recordings are taken in Obsidian: [https://imgur.com/a/zxSrtgl](https://imgur.com/a/zxSrtgl) It showcases tables and Kanban boards in Obsidian. I'm wondering if these can be done in Emacs too.

Perhaps try this https://github.com/Fuco1/org-pretty-table

Try valign-mode
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 13:05
This seems like a solution for the tables but what about Kanban boards?
_viz_ · 2022-05-18 13:07
I don't even know what they are, nor do I understand the clip.
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 13:13
The second clip in the imgur link shows Kanban boards in Obsidian. E.g. for project management you can have sections where it says “Ideas” “To Do” “In Progress” “Published” That’s where the value of dragging cards around comes in.
AlanYx · 2022-05-18 13:22
Check out org-modern for one easy way to do that with tables.
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 13:23
Thank you. That solves the table. But what about Kanban boards (second clip in imgur)?
_viz_ · 2022-05-18 13:32
FWIW, org-modern does not align tables with pixel precision.
_viz_ · 2022-05-18 13:33
AFAIU, what you're doing is moving the heading to another section? If that's the case, you're looking for org-refile; although, that is org-mode specific. EDIT: dragging -> doing.
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 13:39
Yes. I’m moving things around to different sections. I did a search for org-refile and am struggling to find a video demonstration or image of it. Do you know where I can find one?
_viz_ · 2022-05-18 13:43
I don't use it myself but I found this video which is a part of a popular series: https://yewtu.be/watch?v=ECWtf6mAi9k
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 13:47
Ah okay. I don't think it's the same as the GUI interface I'm looking for in a Kanban board. Thank you though!
sunnyata · 2022-05-18 15:04
AFAIK the Kanban board bit doesn't exist. You could write it yourself though.
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 15:04
How?
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 15:04
Is there any visual demonstration of this being used?
sunnyata · 2022-05-18 15:07
By [learning elisp](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/elisp.html) then writing a mode that does what you want. Not a trivial undertaking but I believe in you!
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 15:08
How long could it take to become proficient enough to be able to create it? I have zero programming experience.
sunnyata · 2022-05-18 15:14
It all depends on you but yeah probably quite a while. Some people take to programming very quickly, most take quite some time to master the basics. Whilst it's perfectly possible, a mode that does what you want wouldn't be the simplest and probably shouldn't be the first one you write. I guess you'd need a plain text format and a visual mode that shows the text in draggable boxes and columns. Or you could persuade an elisp programmer that they really need kanban-mode in their life and get them to do it for you.
dpoggio · 2022-05-18 15:15
It does exist. I just searched kanban org mode and found: https://github.com/gizmomogwai/org-kanban Includes it’s own link to a live test.
sunnyata · 2022-05-18 15:16
awesome!

By quite a while what do you mean? A month? 6 months? A year? > Or you could persuade an elisp programmer that they really need kanban-mode in their life and get them to do it for you. Hahaha... or I could... maybe pay one? Are there any elisp programmers that do such work?
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 15:25
This looks close. Are there any video demonstrations of this being used?
dpoggio · 2022-05-18 16:43
There’s a link just in the page.
better-vessel · 2022-05-18 16:50
I had clicked on that link but still couldn’t find one, unless I or you are talking about a different link?

The package does not seem to be maintained, but I just tried it and it works as described (it simply changes the way the characters are displayed, not the actual characters). I did a comparison here: https://imgur.com/u1hfRKL.png The vertical space is because the way I set line spacing. If you set that to 0, the table looks 'pretty': `(setq-default line-spacing 0)`
takeonrules · 2022-05-19 02:21
I think org headlines as table view might be able to do this. But what is your goal in the swimlanes?
better-vessel · 2022-05-19 03:48
Thanks for the comparison. I’m looking for Kanban _boards_ too (second clip). Do you know if they exist for emacs?
arthurno1 · 2022-05-19 10:33
You should be able to do what you ask for, but you will probably have to code your own solution. For the image two, there was an old package that lets you drag and drop text within Emacs buffer which I remember I tested few years ago, but I don't remember the name of the package. If you can find it, paired with Emacs buttons.el or widget.el or something else similar, maybe svg icons/images, you could implement something like you show in your second screenshot.
