Hello, everyone!
I've uploaded packages for Emacs 28.1 to [my PPA](https://launchpad.net/~kelleyk/+archive/ubuntu/emacs). Thank you very much to everyone who's filed issues against the GitHub repository (or reached out via email). It's wonderful to know that folks appreciate this effort, and I love being able to give something back to the community.
Now: on to the good stuff!
Packages are available for 18.04 LTS ("bionic"), 20.04 LTS ("focal"), 21.10 ("impish"), and 22.04 LTS ("jammy").
Emacs 28 deprecates Xft and encourages using Cairo/HarfBuzz for font rendering; this build configuration is the one that [my Emacs 27 packages were already using](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/iw0i9p/emacs_271_available_in_kelleykemacs_ppa/), so there should not be any changes there.
The big new feature in Emacs 28 is [native compilation](https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GccEmacs), and as you might expect, these packages enable that feature. The only exceptions are the packages for 18.04 LTS ("bionic"); `libgccjit` packages aren't available for the version of GCC that ships with 18.04 LTS.
The only packaging-related update I have to share is that [the `master` branch of the packaging repository](https://github.com/kelleyk/ppa-emacs) now has a `README` with release notes. I'm going to try to move more notes about the packaging process there over time.
Enjoy, and [please let me know](https://github.com/kelleyk/ppa-emacs/issues) if you have any trouble.

Thank you so much for this!

Will it work on Debian systems?
Can the package source be adapted easily for to build a package for Debian?

I logged in just to say thanks!

Just a quick thing, on Ubuntu 20.04, I got an error while trying to install emacs28-common because there are files that are also on emacs27-common, so I suggest doing
apt remove emacs27 emacs27-common
before running
apt install emacs28

I use spacemacs and now I am getting:
Symbol’s value as variable is void: auto-save-list-file-prefix
I'm trying to troubleshoot it because it does not happen on my root emacs, which has no config.
g_tb · 2022-05-16 10:13
OK, so this seems to be something else. With doom and no config:
emacs -q
Symbol’s value as variable is void: auto-save-list-file-prefix
Edit: I meant -q!

Like /u/g_tb mentioned in a comment thread below, these packages are currently having the trouble [described in this issue](https://github.com/kelleyk/ppa-emacs/issues/21).
I'm investigating, but it might be a good idea to hold off on the `*-kk1*` packages for Emacs 28.1 if you haven't already tried to install them.

Yes, I think that you are running into [this problem](https://github.com/kelleyk/ppa-emacs/issues/21). I'm exploring building the packages without native compilation in order to temporarily resolve the problem.
Sorry for all of the trouble, and thank thank you for sharing feedback here. We'll figure this out!
lunarsunrise · 2022-05-17 04:09
Sorry for the trouble, everyone!
I've uploaded source packages (version `emacs28_28.1~1.git5a223c7f2e-kk2`) that disable native compilation. In my local testing, they do not have this issue. Please give them a try once they're available on Launchpad.
We still need to investigate and see if we can figure out how to enable the feature without causing trouble. Let me know if you have any thoughts!

I can confirm that it works now.
I just did
apt purge emacs27 emacs27-common emacsen-common
apt install emacs28
and it seems to work just fine.
Thanks!

Had I realized this was available, and not available for 22.10 , I am not sure if I would have upgraded Ubuntu. Do you have plans to prepare a similar package soon for Ubuntu 22.10?
Thank you!
