Best packages to use with evil mode .

NaorieIsntWendy · 2022-05-13 13:22
I just discovered `evil-matchit`, a really‏‏‎‏‏‎‏‏‎‏‏‎nice package to jump between matching elements (besides brackets). Which made me reflect - are there other Emacs packages out there that enhance/extend on evil mode?

I just use evil collection and evil surround
howardthegeek · 2022-05-13 15:18
I use evil-snipe, but I'm replacing it with avy-goto
TheFrenchPoulp · 2022-05-13 15:45
I think these 2 are complementary, or does Avy have a previous/next feature that I missed?
TheFrenchPoulp · 2022-05-13 15:46
`evil-commentary`

evil-surround is a must. I like it because it embraces the main reason I wanted to start using vim-like editing: text objects and motions. Favourite examples: * `"In a string"`, change the surrounding quote from `"` to `'`: `cs"'` * `( Within parens )`, remove the internal surrounding whitespace: `cs))` * or `(Within parens)`, add internal surrounding whitespace: `cs((` The last two work because they both match parens, but `)` and `(` imply different padding, so you first match the surrounding delimiters, and then replace them with `(|)` or `( | )`.

Avy can jump anywhere, plus with timer, I can type one or three characters... Do it does seem like one can subsume the other... Depending on the key bindings.

[evil-lion](https://github.com/edkolev/evil-lion): port of lion.vim for rapid text alignment [evil-vimish-fold](https://github.com/alexmurray/evil-vimish-fold): fold text in vim style [evil-multiedit](https://github.com/hlissner/evil-multiedit): multiple cursors with evil-mode using iedit [evil-textobj-tree-sitter](https://github.com/meain/evil-textobj-tree-sitter): provides new textobjects to evil-mode, thanks to treesitter [evil-surround](https://github.com/emacs-evil/evil-surround): port of tpope's vim-surround [evil-commentary](https://github.com/linktohack/evil-commentary): port of tpope's vim-commentary [evil-snipe](https://github.com/hlissner/evil-snipe): fast 2-char search, optionally overrides f/F and t/T to work on multiple lines [evil-exchange](https://github.com/Dewdrops/evil-exchange): swap text selected with motions [evil-owl](https://github.com/mamapanda/evil-owl): show markers and registers contents in a window, when calling a command that deals with them [avy](https://github.com/abo-abo/avy): despite not starting with evil, avy is well integrated in evil-mode. It jumps around text and works with evil commands, like evil-delete [evil-collection](https://github.com/emacs-evil/evil-collection): collection of bindings in several modes, probably the first you want to check if you haven't yet

It seems that your comment contains 1 or more links that are hard to tap for mobile users. I will extend those so they're easier for our sausage fingers to click! Oh I know about those commands I use the timer one daily, but I also use snipe semi-regularily (it's *faster* for inline jumps and supports previous/next) that's why it was weird to me that you mentioned the non-timer command specifically. Thought I was missing something
howardthegeek · 2022-05-13 17:20
True the previous/next is unique. I guess I try to "hit the spot" the first time, but you're right. There is overlap and differences, and using both makes sense. I just find that after having it on for years, I haven't been using it as much as I thought I would.

> `evil-owl` The feature I never knew I wanted, I'll have to check it out and see how intrusive it gets
mysockinabox · 2022-05-13 18:25
Did you mean [tpope](https://github.com/tpope) or is there an interloper I’m just hearing of?
marlgl · 2022-05-13 18:46
thanks for pointing that out, I corrected it. Apparently I renamed him to Gim in my config, probably a typo considering the position of the characters.
lastnamebird · 2022-05-13 23:28
There is `avy-next`, `avy-prev`, and `avy-resume` which will let you select from all the candidates again.
TheFrenchPoulp · 2022-05-13 23:32
Wonderful thanks!

Doom uses most (if not all) useful evil packages.
mmarshall540 · 2022-05-14 22:48
I stopped using Evil a while back, but I really missed evil-snipe for the longest time. Then one day I realized that doing an `isearch` for 2 characters is essentially the same thing. The extra keypress it sometimes requires for exiting the search is made up for by the fact that I'd probably have to put evil-snipe behind a prefix anyway, if I could run it without loading evil.

Good bot

Any chance someone has come up with a consistent way to combine both evil-snipe and evil-surround, as they both want to use the \`s\` key?
