Emacs on iOS

Far-Warning-9574 · 2022-05-13 03:29
Just got an iPhone, anyone here running Emacs in a terminal emulator? Awhile ago on Android I was able to use syncthing and termux for this and it was great. Would appreciate a quick run down of what free (as in beer) apps will work for this.

Emacs is the best friend of a keyboard… I used to use Emacs through SSH from an iPad. It was just a pain. If you reach some productive setup, I would want to know.

>If you reach some productive setup, I would want to know. I had a very productive set up prior, but to be clear I wasn't "programming" on it, outside of minor config tweaks. The key, for me, is using the volume up/down keys as control/meta, and using it in landscape mode. I LOVED having ALL of Org's features plus full Emacs behind it, in my pocket. Amazing for personal productivity (agenda view in pocket), org-capturing, time-tracking, shopping lists, etc etc.

Ish will work

I occasionally use eMacs running locally in iSH. I also ssh from iSH to a remote shell and run eMacs there. It’s not great, but I use it for reading an encrypted org file when I’m in a bind away from a computer.

If it is just org mode you are after, beorg works not too badly for things lke todos and agenda. YMMV. I am very curious as to what you end up using emacs for on iOS. iPhone user myself..

Almost strictly Org-Mode, I prefer having access to the full suite of emacs functionality and a consistent interface, over what the apps offer (which tend to be just a front-end for Org Mode). I find having access to capture, agenda view, time clocking and agenda searching an invaluable tool if I'm already carrying a phone in my pocket. I got a lot of value out of being able to do full custom searches or tweaking views, and messing around with elisp is kinda like Angry Birds or something for me sometimes. By mapping cntrl/meta to volume keys, and using it in landscape mode, it ends up being quite ergonomic too.

What do you iOS users use for syncing? On Android I used syncthing, which was great, but rsync would be just fine if not better too. It's just a small set of files I'd like sync'd anytime changes are made to any file across devices.

How are you syncing files?

I don't really use it, just tried it out once. Best way imo though would be encrypting them with gpg and storing on git

I don't need version control - just syncing a set of org files that update to the latest version occasionally (but at this point, this isn't emacs related at all, so I've moved my question elsewhere), but thanks :-)

Check out BeOrg, though I admit I use it more for quick capture of todos and for looking at how far behind I am in my todo list as an on-the-go client rather than something as robust as org-mode in emacs (you might want to also check out Plain ToDos tho I find it a bit pricey for what it is.). I would love someone to build something with the beauty and UI of Todoist's client for emacs. I've also been monkeying around with switching over to taskpaper mode instead of org-mode todos and using the mobile iOS client Taskmator (there is a scarily excellent Taskpaper mode in emacs which is :chefs\_kiss:

I am using git.

I use Plain and Working Copy for syncing via git.

Really excited to try this out, here's to hoping it goes smoothly! Does this work when your phone isn't on your local network too (like syncthing)?

How are you getting your files from MobiusSync to iSH, and vice versa? On iSH, I've mounted the shared directory from Mobius on /mnt. Looks workable enough but just wondering what you've got going on.
