I couldn't install emacs on the lab pc without sudo. the solution was

The solution: ssh into a server with emacs installed and tramp back to the local machine. Can your vim do that?
NowaStonka · 2022-05-12 12:36
One way to solve a problem for sure. Check mosh protocol for even better connection.
Papablo · 2022-05-12 12:38
I bet you didn't expect that shit to happen
gepardcv · 2022-05-12 12:59
You can compile Emacs from source and set the target prefix to somewhere in your home directory. No root needed.
georgist · 2022-05-12 13:13
exactly, or even just take a compiled tarball and extract to a dir
ckoneru · 2022-05-12 13:14
This is what I would do. You can also use Emacs AppImage.

Jokes aside: yes. https://vim.fandom.com/wiki/Editing_remote_files_via_scp_in_vim

God, I love tramp.

Careful with posting those global-scope public ipv6 addresses :)
The addressreveals that you're probably in Debrecen,Hungary :)

Not mine

Couldn't compile without libraries, and it started to be too complicated from therw
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 16:36
I was looking for it, but I didn't find it
a-c-d-w · 2022-05-12 16:39
This right here. I do that with bleeding-edge emacs. Simple as.
georgist · 2022-05-12 17:31
just look for your distro, eg https://packages.debian.org/buster/emacs
polyPhaser23 · 2022-05-12 18:38
Can't even ssh in the labs pc, so I was sneaky and installed nix, you can install it without root! , requires user namespace for non root users. What a bless was able to get my doom emacs setup in under 10min with my personal config, can also install other software in general as a perk.
gepardcv · 2022-05-12 21:20
Without root, installing in `/nix` won't work, and changing the installation location to the home directory will make Hydra binary caches useless (and will likely hit some obscure Nix bug, since it's a rarely-used code path). Good thought, though.
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 21:42
I'm on phone, but aren't there Deb packages? If so, probably I'd need sude for that to install
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 21:44
Yeah, it came to my mind after I already made this post. Good solution for dot files? Should I just eval it every time I open the holy editor?
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 21:47
And how can I tell tell to the build system where the compiled libraries are?
georgist · 2022-05-12 21:48
no you can just extract with `ar xv file.deb` and then untar the data.tar.xz. Probably there is a more debian way to do this as a user but the aforementioned will work.
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 21:49
True :( I've built up too much urge to brag about my editor of choice over too long time,
paadam94 · 2022-05-12 21:52
Ohh damn, I didn't know about that. I'd still have the library issue, no? Or all the dependencies are static?
georgist · 2022-05-12 21:56
you'd need the right libs too, which you can get by exporting LD_LIBRARY_PATH, use `ldd ./path/to/emacs|grep -i found` to see what it needs, most if not all may already be installed under /usr/lib
onetom · 2022-05-13 03:21
what's up with all these down votes?
onetom · 2022-05-13 03:22
Fasza, kedves hallgató! ;)
a-c-d-w · 2022-05-13 03:49
I run the following (basically):
./autogen.sh
configure --prefix="$HOME/.local" # of course, wherever you like
make bootstrap
make install
## EDIT
Oh, you're talking about like, dependencies. That I don't know. And of course, that's what makes it complicated. However, I figured my bit out with the README in the repo, so you probably can too.
Looks like something like
./configure \
CPPFLAGS='-I/foo/myinclude' LDFLAGS='-L/bar/mylib' \
CFLAGS='-O3' LIBS='-lfoo -lbar'
(this is straight from the INSTALL file.)
Good luck!

I guess for not meeting GDPR requirements?
onetom · 2022-05-13 06:34
Iiiinteresting... I wouldn't have guessed. I live in Hong Kong for the past decade, so I'm a bit oblivious to the specifics of GDPR.
paadam94 · 2022-05-13 06:35
I was saying it tounge-in-cheek
dzecniv · 2022-05-13 23:06
well done. We also have a portable Emacs here: https://portacle.github.io/ It's tailored for Common Lisp (it ships SBCL and Quicklisp), but you get a full featured Emacs anyways (with Magit and a couple more packages, and git).
paadam94 · 2022-05-21 23:56
what's nix?
