mu4e is not calling mbsync
BobKoss · 2022-05-10 11:41
To get my email, while in the mu4e-main buffer, I have to type U, then wait for email to be downloaded, then J i to see the new headers. I have:
mu4e-get-mail-command "mbsync -a"
mu4e-update-interval 600
Having to type U is a small price to pay for being able to deal with email in Emacs, but I know I shouldn't have to do this.

I have set up a user unit file which runs mbsync at start-up, and also at periodic intervals. I can set out the details if you like...

Anything show up in your warnings buffer?
BobKoss · 2022-05-10 13:12
Do you mean \*Messages\* ? Nothing having to do with fetching mail.
BobKoss · 2022-05-10 13:14
Shouldn't have to do that. M-x mu4e should call mbsync and do it repeatedly every mu4e-update-interval.
7890yuiop · 2022-05-10 14:04
`M-x list-timers` shows me:
200.87 5.00 #f(compiled-function () #<bytecode 0x155d606146b5> [mu4e-index-update-in-background mu4e-update-mail-and-index])
mclearc · 2022-05-10 14:19
Odd bug. Have you double-checked that these variables are set properly after mu4e has loaded? I know that my setup sometimes would give me issues with finding mbsync so I have:
```emacs-lisp
(setq mu4e-get-mail-command (concat (executable-find "mbsync") " -a"))
```
BobKoss · 2022-05-10 14:53
The plot thickens. I don't have a running timer. Which begs the question, why not?
BobKoss · 2022-05-10 14:55
C-h v mu4e-get-mail-command is "mbsync -a"
mclearc · 2022-05-10 15:02
Yeah -- odd. Looks like the thing to do is see if you still have the problem with a minimal working example + emacs -q. If so it might be a genuine bug (though I'm not seeing it in my rig with emacs 29, mu, and mbsync). Otherwise you'll have to bisect your config.

(use-package mu4e
:straight (:host github
:repo "djcb/mu"
;; FIXME: branch master does not work
:branch "release/1.6"
:files ("mu4e/*")
:pre-build (("./autogen.sh") ("make")))
:custom (mu4e-mu-binary (expand-file-name "mu/mu"
(straight--repos-dir "mu")))
:config
(setq mu4e-update-interval (* 10 60))
(setq mu4e-get-mail-command "mbsync -a")
(setq mu4e-maildir "~/Mail"))
This is what I have in my init.el
Not sure if this is going to help.
I'm running emacs 28.
BobKoss · 2022-05-11 10:55
Thanks. I will try that today.
BobKoss · 2022-05-12 16:38
I may have found the culprit. I'm using Doom Emacs. In init.el, I had:
>:email
>
> (mu4e +org +gmail)
>
>
>
>And now I have
>
>(mu4e +gmail)
mu4e is calling mbsync now.
No idea why.
