Using Emacs 29.0.50 on Windows 10.
When I have tabs open, close Emacs, the sessions gets saved. When I re-open Emacs with that session, my tab-bar looks like this:

The first time I click on a tab, the associated window opens yet the tab-bar disappears. When I re-enable tab-bar with tab-bar-mode the tabs get re-displayed yet the appearance is different:

You see the small 'x' next to the tab name? This tab-bar behaves normally though.

The initial behavior is annoying with the tab-bar disappearing. Anybody experiencing this behavior too? Is this a 'feature' I have to come by with some init.el settings or a bug I should report?

I'm using emacs 28 and I have the same problem. The little "x"s get replaced with a big "X" after reopening a session (desktop.el).

It seems like `tab-bar--load-buttons` should've set the x icon for you, but I don't know why it wouldn't have run.

I’m not sure about your exact issue, bit for me when loading a session with tabs, the tab bar doesn’t show until I create a new tab.
My understanding is that because I have no tabs and viable tab bar when loading the session, no tab bar code is run when the session is loaded. It simply sets the `tabs` frame parameter to the value saved in the session. Hence next time I invoke any commands that checks off the tab bar should be visible, that’s when it’s actually displayed.

Thanks for the bug report. This is fixed now in Emacs 29.
