I'm trying to set up Emacs with Fira Code, but I use several alternate characters for the font. Is there any way to force Emacs to use these alternate characters?

I think this might be what you're looking for. [https://github.com/jming422/fira-code-mode](https://github.com/jming422/fira-code-mode)

What do you mean by "alternate characters" in this context?

I think author has this in mind: https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode/wiki/How-to-enable-stylistic-sets

If that's the intent, then it wasn't yet implemented in Emacs. It is mentioned as a desired feature in our `etc/TODO`.
Patches welcome.

Stylistic sets were indeed what I had in mind. Glad to know it's on the to-do list!

a bit of a workaround that I have been using I found on this [blog post](https://blog.lambda.cx/posts/opentype-font-exploration/). Essentially, they use this tool https://github.com/twardoch/fonttools-opentype-feature-freezer to enable font variants by default. Though I'm not certain if it works with ligatures.
