How to add left/right paddings to tabs and mode-line-identification?

Is there a way to add left/right paddings to tab titles and mode-line-identification? I know I can redefine the functions and add spaces to the each side of the text, but I wonder if there's a better way. Any suggestions? Thanks! That looks great! Can you tell me how to include the padding in the mode-line-buffer-id? I tried with the `(:box)` face attribute but it includes borders only on top and bottom.
