My take on dotemacs.org

I've switched to a .org configuration file to organize all my init scripts. Code is at https://github.com/rougier/dotemacs. There is (inside) an accompanying my/config-mode to ease the writing. Screenshot has been made using imenu-list mode which is really a great mode. I enhanced it a bit with an imenu-list-filter-mode to selectively display headlines.

I'm doing the same thing for my init and that's the best way IMO, but I just want to say how impressed I am with your layout. Didn't see that one before, thanks for sharing!

This is so beautiful, I've looked at this for 6 hours now
jumpUpHigh · 2022-05-06 20:25
which package shows org outline on the side?
nonreligious · 2022-05-06 20:26
Thank you for highlighting `imenu-list` at the very least! I just switched to a literate configuration in a `.org` file and it has been very annoying jumping between headers in order to tweak different packages - I had to set an increasing number of bookmarks beforehand.
1980sMUD · 2022-05-06 21:27
Also wondering about this!
beefy_synths · 2022-05-06 21:57
That's beautiful. Whats the font?
ProfessorSexyTime · 2022-05-06 22:08
Seems to be making use of [`imenu-list`](https://github.com/rougier/dotemacs/blob/master/dotemacs.org#sidebar).
1980sMUD · 2022-05-06 22:17
Thanks!
JamMcFar · 2022-05-06 23:06
Probably Fira Code or Fira Code retina
trae · 2022-05-06 23:32
I think it's time to start a subreddit just for dotemacs show cases.
tryptych · 2022-05-07 00:33
My first assumption was that there was a website dotemacs.org , perhaps with customisation examples... and the domain isn't even registered! Anyone interested?
tryptych · 2022-05-07 00:36
That seemed silly not to snap up :) If anyone has any thoughts on what to do with it (I can imagine a "pimp my config" + beginner tutorials resource), let me know.
youraveragecanuck · 2022-05-07 01:20
It’s Roboto Mono
wakatara · 2022-05-07 07:42
Wow. this is gorgeous. I just started looking at nano to try and see if porting over to it for the nicer writig environment (though big on dark mode) makes sense. Beautiful work.
wakatara · 2022-05-07 07:44
Disagree. having people post interesting config files is ridiculously valuable in the main. Learn all sorts of stuff.
holgerschurig · 2022-05-07 08:04
Some years ago I switched to it ... and then some months later back. Mostly because of these points: * i had the impression that no one read my prose, so why describing it all in detail? * error handling was ... challenging. Suppose the tangled elisp file hat a bug. Do I run "emacs --debug-init". I get a backtrace in a very hunan-unreadable format (Emacs should perhaps adopt a bit from Python here). I get a byte position. Then I have to open the tangled file and goto-char to that position. I have to remember the place, open the org file, search the same place, fix and save. That got onto my nerves sooner than later.

Clean slick modren ❤
dakra · 2022-05-07 15:35
> I have to remember the place, open the org file, search the same place, fix and save I have this in my org file: #+PROPERTY: header-args:emacs-lisp :comments link then I can jump from any point in my init.el to the org location with `M-x org-babel-tangle-jump-to-org`.

Am I the only one seeing 404 on that link?
Oerm · 2022-05-07 17:09
Nah, I have the same issue because my Reddit app (Apollo) replaces `#` in links with `%23`. It works for me after doing the resubstitution.
Kaligule · 2022-05-07 20:48
A collection of well written configs - syntax highlighted and searchable. There are quite a few public ones on GitHub/GitLab, but no central repository I know of.
Livid_Ad_2892 · 2022-05-08 16:17
why?
holgerschurig · 2022-05-09 06:37
Interesting, this looks like it exists since 2010 (according to "git blame"), but I never heard about it. It isn't even maked as auto-load. So in my buggy .el file I'd need to require org first?
nhooyr · 2022-05-09 09:02
Nice! Is that GUI or Terminal Emacs?
luiggi_oasis · 2022-05-09 13:10
Roboto Mono going by this https://github.com/rougier/dotemacs/blob/master/dotemacs.org#colors
Nicolas-Rougier · 2022-05-10 18:42
GUI, but the terminal version looks the same (provided your terminal has margin settings)

Livid_Ad_2892 · 2022-05-11 17:08
still why though?
publicvoit · 2022-06-16 13:43
I have no idea, how many people are reading [my public configuration](https://github.com/novoid/dot-emacs/blob/master/config.org). The effort pays off for my personal use-cases alone. I can't possibly remember how I stumbled over this or that snippet or package and why I added it to my config. So basically, I'm doing this for my future self in order to teach myself about the history and give clues whether or not things can be removed as well. Another positive aspect is that I may post an URL to a certain heading of my config instead of copying code.
