Got a good chuckle from Stallman's reply. Anyone know what curse he's referring to?

Also love that he's still rocking that NSA/FBI admonition 馃ぃ... Relevant as ever!
kaushalmodi 路 2022-05-05 16:52
Search online for "Cassandra's curse" :)
mitch_feaster 路 2022-05-05 16:54
Lol got it... Damn, gotta be cultured to get Stallman's jokes!

**[Cassandra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassandra)** >Cassandra or Kassandra; Ancient Greek: 螝伪蟽蟽维谓未蟻伪, pronounced [kas:谩ndra], also 螝伪蟽维谓未蟻伪), (sometimes referred to as Alexandra) was a Trojan priestess of Apollo in Greek mythology cursed to utter true prophecies, but never to be believed. In modern usage her name is employed as a rhetorical device to indicate someone whose accurate prophecies are not believed. Cassandra was said to be a daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. Her older brother was Hector, hero of the Greek-Trojan war. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/emacs/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

To save people a link: In Greek mythology, Cassandra was a woman gifted the power of prophecy by Apollo. When she still rejected him, he cursed her to never be believed even as she predicted the future.

I think that's the curse of Cassandra's eventual consistency Edit: https://medium.com/inlocotech/cassandra-cap-theorem-curse-a207ba5657c5

Our obsession with borrowing names from Greek mythology without actually learning what those myths are about sometimes takes some ridiculous depths to reach the bottom. I wish software developers picked the skill of naming things from Tolkien. He was great at making shit up. Programmers these days would name projects like sisyphus.js and midas-rust [I don't know if these exists for real, just trying to make a point]* and then whine that stuff doesn't work or that nobody wants to touch it for some reason. **upd:** LOL. Apparently, those things do exist: https://github.com/simsalabim/sisyphus https://docs.rs/midas_python/latest/src/midas/lib.rs.html

>I wish software developers picked the skill of naming things from Tolkien Peter Thiel funded dystopian ventures already have that market cornered I'm afraid
ilemming 路 2022-05-05 22:36
Ah, right. That fucker ruined it all: Palantir, Clarium, Valar Ventures, Mithril Capital. But just because of one bad actor, good things should be abandoned or ignored. Thiel is an avid chess player, and Epstein loved evolutionary dynamics. But that doesn't mean we should cancel chess or evolutionary game theory, right?

You got a chuckle out of it before you got the one reference?
mitch_feaster 路 2022-05-05 22:58
Context clues my man. The fact that it鈥檚 a joke it鈥檚 obvious. He鈥檚 poking fun at the lack of description.
Hlorri 路 2022-05-06 03:26
Jokes? No, this guy is serious. I *try* to read his documentation sometimes, but the way it's structured in deeply nested `info` pages with opaque/ambiguous section names/organization means that the path of least resistance is usually Google; it might as well have been NSA. At least that's *my* take on the curse.
KDallas_Multipass 路 2022-05-06 04:36
That's Sacha Chua!!!
mitch_feaster 路 2022-05-06 04:37
Yeah she鈥檚 great

Midas-rust 馃槀馃槀馃槀馃槀
PreferredBadger672 路 2022-05-06 07:44
Do people see that as admonition? I always assumed he is genuinely trying to spread the idea.
NoisyFrequency 路 2022-05-06 09:34
We just need a project called "Bombadil" that's cool but doesn't do shit 馃槑
wewbull 路 2022-05-06 09:52
I think thats a whole classification of projects.
big_lentil 路 2022-05-06 10:34
I'm most definitely in the minority here but I actually love info pages. I don't think their discoverability is too bad because you can search entire manuals with all the text search tools like isearch and they almost always have proper index pages as well.
tarsius_ 路 2022-05-06 11:44
Well now I have to release [`sisyphus.el`](https://github.com/magit/sisyphus) earlier than planed, lest someone snatches the name from me.
mitch_feaster 路 2022-05-06 13:58
Yeah, that鈥檚 what I mean by admonition > The act, or an act, of admonishing; counsel or advice; gentle reproof; instruction in duties; caution; direction.

+1. `i` in Info is your friend. And it helps to use a good completion framework or a `completion-styles` setting that includes `substring` or regexp matching.
blablook 路 2022-05-06 15:44
Afaik, originally it's a joke reference to the Oracle db too - Cassandra being a cursed oracle kinda casts a curse at the oracledb.
rswgnu 路 2022-05-08 16:32
And with the GNU Hyperbole package, links to Info nodes work in any non-read-only buffer types.
