Best way to integrate Twitter into Emacs?

nonreligious · 2022-05-03 14:53
I suspect that the right answer from the point of view of productivity is "don't integrate Twitter and Emacs", but if you'll humor me I'd like to try. A bunch of packages I've found have all been abandoned or haven't been updated in a while, with the implied cause being changes to the authentication method. Here are a few methods I've seen: - [Twittering mode](https://github.com/hayamiz/twittering-mode/tree/master): Sounds like this was the [best way](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/35qs7a/favorite_twitter_setup/) to use Twitter a few years ago, but looks unmaintained. Does anyone still use it? - [nntwitter](https://github.com/dickmao/nntwitter): Uses gnus, with every user you follow becoming an individual feed. I've tried it, and while it kind of works, I follow ~200 people, so it takes 30 minutes or so to refresh. Plus I want to create a single time-ordered feed to read, and haven't worked out how to create a [virtual group](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_mono/gnus.html#Virtual-Groups) to do this yet. - [gnus-twit](https://github.com/larsmagne/gnus-twit): From larsmagne, which also uses `gnus`. Has anyone else tried it? Is it secure now that it uses `Nitter`? I found [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/ugb9rk/how_i_use_powershell_twarc_and_emacs_org_mode_to/) from yesterday when I did a search of the subreddit, haven't gone through it yet.

As always: to answer your question, we would need your set of requirements as stated on https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/ For example, I assume you don't care about Twitter surveys because I don't think that any of the three options you've mentioned do support advanced Twitter features like that. My next question would be: what else you don't care for. And so forth.

Doom-Emacs uses twittering-mode. It's pinned to a certain commit: [https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs/blob/master/modules/app/twitter/packages.el](https://github.com/doomemacs/doomemacs/blob/master/modules/app/twitter/packages.el) Not using it myself. Twitter screwed us years ago when they made their API really awkward to use when you are not an official partner..

How about this for a specification: - Able to read tweets automatically pulled from my timeline, going back e.g. to the previous 24 hours, with the ability to pull older tweets if desired - Tweets listed in the order they are posted (or at least, how they appear on my timeline) - Pictures included in tweets are automatically displayed, including profile pictures, with link previews optional - Optional: being able to "Like"/"Retweet" and save to Bookmarks -- not necessary but it would be a great help - Can live without: Twitter surveys, video/multimedia previews

Thanks! I use `use-package`, do I have to use something like `quelpa` to pin a certain commit?
jacmoe · 2022-05-03 18:29
I don't know anything about that. But I've heard that that's what `straight` is for -> https://jeffkreeftmeijer.com/emacs-straight-use-package/

I'm using RSS Bridge and elfeed. Just following individual people I like that way. Because in the end, I feel like of all social networks the Twitter algorithm and its structure do the best job of screwing my mental health.

i've just started using twittering mode and so far so good. but i'm more of a lurker so i can't really say how anything other than retweeting and liking tweets works
nonreligious · 2022-05-03 21:26
Fair enough! I mostly follow news/politics people plus science people, which is mostly bearable.

Thanks! Good to hear that it has that functionality. Hopefully it's not vulnerable security wise.

> If I stole your identity, I'd [****] myself The [inimitable David So](https://youtu.be/GpH4hrV38J0?t=125) Not that I think emacs users generally have anything worth stealing, but [disguising credentials in ascii art](https://github.com/hayamiz/twittering-mode/blob/114891e8fdb4f06b1326a6cf795e49c205cf9e29/twittering-mode.el#L13203-L13228) is weak sauce indeed.
