emacs and thunderbird?

chandaliergalaxy · 2022-05-03 02:41
I used to use an external editor extension for thunderbird to compose my email in emacs. However, with a thunderbird update several years ago, that extension has been deprecated. I like the idea of having a central local repository on my computer for mail (and calendar) - just different ways to interface it (either emacs or thunderbird). My understanding is that offlineimap and notmuch replicate your email archive separately from what exists say in thunderbird, and nowadays it's necessary to compose HTML emails for which I would use the thunderbird editor. Anyone have any suggestions (cross-platform, or just Windows at the moment) to integrate the two? "Emacs everywhere" seems to be a Linux solution.

Inside Emacs, mu4e and notmuch are well integrated with the GUI environment. I haven't had stab at Thunderbird many many moons now ..so idea what so special TB is doing to your mail . Offlineimap will sync your remote mail to local space . Notmuch and Mu are for indexing and searching and tagging efficiently . I don't think you have to sweat a lot to integrate those with emacs . I believes lots of people running that kind stuff, if you get a chance look into their dot file i.e. emacs or init.el to find out. In essence, I am saying to you, it is very much possible and it is not too hard either.

> nowadays it's necessary to compose HTML emails You're missing a "for me" in that phrase. I'm not disputing whether you need to, but a great many people have no need to *ever* do that (although sadly a great many of *those* people are doing it regardless, because most modern email clients are awful that way). You *potentially* don't need to do anything at all -- just fire up Thunderbird if you need to write a message or reply to something. If I was going to use *both* Thunderbird and mu4e then I'd be taking a look at the Maildir support and seeing whether it was possible to make them use the *same* Maildir. * https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird/Maildir * https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/maildir-thunderbird Whether or not changes made by one client would be reflected properly by the other would probably be the main concern. If you wanted an Emacs mail reader to call Thunderbird when you wanted to *reply* to a message you were reading in Emacs, then perhaps you can do that via a `mailto:` URL. If I've read someone else's comment correctly, you can send any of these parameters: https://hg.mozilla.org/comm-central/file/778b87646604b6b0686ec6c8d221fbd5b36a811f/mailnews/compose/src/nsMsgComposeService.cpp#l1362 The `browse-url-mailto-function` variable in Emacs sounds relevant, too. (I'm just hand-waving though -- I don't have an actual solution for you.)

As @unixbhaskar said, you’ll find a dusin blog posts and dot-files that’ll help you, but I would suggest mbsync instead of offlineimap. Offlineimap is resource heavy and quite slow in comparison

But all of these requires that I download the mail twice (once for Thunderbird and once for emacs)?

Ok HTML email is not for everyone - I used to do email in a terminal so I didn't jump onto that bandwagon until a few years ago. But I get that including images and adding color etc. really adds value to the email. Yeah that's the kind of info I was looking for - how to use the same Maildir. It's not a project I want to take on since I haven't set up any email in emacs, but I'm going to keep on eye on that.

I don’t know Thunderbird at all I’m afraid. You could write html-email via org-mode though. I personally just use text, so I’m really not the guy to be answering your post, just wanted to chime in about mbsync vs offlineimap.
