emacs use with corne keyboard

I hope it is ok to cross post this here - I am not getting much feedback in the original community. I am hoping that in a community of emacs users, I can find someone with experience in this area! One clarification point - I recognise the use of colemak-dh doesn't impact on the question about modifier key location - the same issues will apply with any layout. Thanks!

Hey. I'm not a very long emacs user, but I'm using doom emacs for a while now, switching from nvim before (coding in different languages mostly). I'm using microdox which has one column less on each side, and went with miryoku layout for it. All the shortcuts etc feel super comfy, although it did take me like two or three weeks of getting used to it. Here you can learn more: [https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku](https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku) Also, I'm about to switch to ferris sweep which has two less thumb keys so if you test out other options than the modifier keys in home row, please be so kind and share your experiences :).

Miryoku with home row modifiers is really comfortable. I am using it with Moonlander with keys removed from it (currently 38 keys), since I kinda don't need more keys anymore (I could do with 36 as in original Miryoku, but I like to have a macro for `M-SPC` and `M-x` on red Moonlander keys). If you are using vanilla bindings, then "sticky" layer might not be the best solution, as you need to access modifiers pretty often. If you are using Evil, Meow or Boon (modal editing), then "sticky" might be good. For inspiration you could check [callum](https://github.com/callum-oakley/qmk_firmware/tree/master/users/callum) or [Seniply](https://stevep99.github.io/seniply/).

Agreed, I like miryoku a lot. My ferris is gonna run on zmk though so I'll have to re-do it there manually or go with another setup. Both options are tempting. The adventure to 10 keys continues haha.

This looks like a good start point worthy of trying - thank you! I think I need to load something up and just try it. Of course, I will feed back how I get on.

I use a corne too but without the thumb keys and outer pinky column. with homerow mods emacs usage has been nice.

qmk user here, dactyl-manuform 4-6. I have a bit more keys than you so I don't run into this issue as much. I'm looking to address certain commands that are more complex that I want into a 1 or 2 button press option. My initial thoughts are to try tap dancing mode. A good quick demo here: [https://www.keebtalk.com/t/qmk-tap-dancing-and-one-shot-layers-quick-demo/4970](https://www.keebtalk.com/t/qmk-tap-dancing-and-one-shot-layers-quick-demo/4970) He goes over taps and holds which I think could solve your issues. It will probably take a bit of thought and planning. Best of luck!

[Ferris](https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku_qmk/tree/miryoku/users/manna-harbour_miryoku#ferris) is supported now. Also, if you find the tertiary thumb keys hard to reach on the microdox you could enable [thumb combos](https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku_qmk/tree/miryoku/users/manna-harbour_miryoku#thumb-combos) there too.

[Miryoku ZMK](https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku/issues/50) will be released soon and supports sweep. If you want to try it before the public release just let me know.

Miryoku is designed to efficiently support any keyboard based workflow, but supporting vanilla emacs and xmonad were both priorities. Also r/ergomechkeyboards is the sub you're looking for!

There's not many thumb keys on a corne, but I would personally only use thumbkeys for modifiers. If you end up doing home row modifiers and have accidental inputs, I would recommend trying Kaleidoscope instead of QMK if possible. Kaleidoscope has a more robust dual-role implementation.
Luseerr · 2022-05-03 05:53
Amazing, thank you so much!

I have installed Miryoku and started with keybr.com to learn the colemak-dh layout. Once I have some proficiency, I will have a go with emacs. There have been several useful suggestions, so I might also give other approaches a go as well to see which I like best.
pauljewell · 2022-05-03 07:06
I have put miryoku on my keyboard for the moment, but I will look into other suggestions, including your suggestion: Kaleidoscope, particularly if I struggle with accidental inputs.
manna_harbour · 2022-05-03 09:11
Great, good luck!
pauljewell · 2022-05-03 10:48
Many thanks, and of course than you so much for sharing the results of your hard work. I have also joined /r/ergomechkeyboards \- good tip!

This makes me happy, needing qmk support was the only reason I went with the elite-c rather than nice!nano for my corne.
manna_harbour · 2022-05-07 07:03
Great! If they're socketed they'll be easy to swap over. There's also [Miryoku KMonad](https://github.com/manna-harbour/miryoku_kmonad) for use with non-programmable boards.
