Is emacs only for those with "low" cognitive abilities?

With Emacs, you don't have to memorize hundreds of unrelated shortcuts, because Emacs is self-introspective and we have `M-x`.

The 90s called.
They want their editor war back.

You can stick to a Vim-style "language model" of editing in any editor. That "language mode" stuff only means that you separate each text editing operation into two parts: one part is to specify the text you want to act on, and the other part is to specify the editing operation. Every single text editor I've ever used allows that separation, usually specifying the text you want to act on is done first, with "selection" commands, and the operation is specified later. (This order is like Vim's visual mode, not like its normal mode.)
Emacs definitely allows you do things in the Vim (visual mode) style too if you want to, and comes with lots of marking commands to specify what text you want to act on. But while Vim's default key bindings more or less force you to always separate each edit into selection and operation steps, Emacs also comes with many convenient shortcut commands that combine both into a single step. For example, to delete a word you can use the "language model" approach of `mark-word kill-region` (`M-@ C-w`), or you can use the `kill-word` commands which combines the two steps into one. If you prefer Vim's two-step method, feel free to use it in Emacs. And for very common combinations, you can gradually learn the one-step commands available to be even faster.
Notice that in Vim too nothing stops you from making your own mappings that combine selection and operation into a single step. Indeed it even comes with a few out of the box. For example, `C-w` deletes the previous word in insert mode.

Nice try, 1 karmapoint troll.
There are far less python/microsoft/lsp/apple fanboys on emacs then nvim. Otherwise it would be trivial to turn neovim into a better emacs. But it won't happen since \*vim ain't got protection with RMS holy water. Yes, doom&space look like vscode. But these people don't have much to say and emacs vanilla install will look like always. Whereas for \*vim there will be soon graphical msinstaller packages and it will support all versions of .NET and have integrated msaccess. But it won't open xdoc after one month. And it will up and download everyday 10gb to russian servers.
And I still can't understand why most people don't get that emacs is about elisp and not the default keybindings

Emacs is superset of vim. Maybe you mean modal vs non-modal editing.
ieure · 2022-05-01 19:10
No, Emacs isn't for you. Hope this helps.

Vim bad

> The difficulty with emacs is that you have to memorise hundreds of unrelated shortcuts
Why do you think so? I've never had to do that, and I don't know any Emacs user who has had to.
Perhaps you've mindlessly swallowed some mindless characterization of Emacs, without actually trying it? Just a guess.

i rarely need to use those commands, but what immediately comes to my mind is that 'v' is like an arrow pointing downwards.

That argument doesn't even pass basic scrutiny since a significant proportion of Emacs users use vi/Vim emulation like Evil, all of which implement the verb object syntax part of vi.
You should have put more effort into this.

Or, just use evil.

Is it really necessary to remove this type of posts? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure you mean well but I wonder if all this well-meaning censorship is making people more fragile by the day. The post is now hidden and I can't even understand if the guy was poking fun or being truly disrespectful.
Also consider that whatever it was the guy wrote, there were some funny and informative answers to it, so not a waste of time.
